I hate to sound like a real idiot here, I just picked up my first JD, and wow, it's weird compared to MH, Cockshutts and Farmalls. I found the oil filter, and assummed the drain plug is next to it, but how much oil does it take with the new oil filter. Is the crankcase breather next to the shifting lever for the engine crankcase, or the transmission...I assume you fill the engine hear. I haven't had a chance to stop in to buy manuals yet, so please bear with me.

I agree it should hold about 8 quarts, but remember once the oil starts running out the oil checker tighten it then add anothe quart to fill the filter. Iv got a few 38 A's so feel free to ask any questions if you need.

Dave - You are correct. The drain plug for engine oil is just in front of the oil filter.

I'm not sure, but I think the A will take about 8 quarts of 30wt. Find the hex pet cock on the side of the engine, and just fill it up till she starts running out of it.

Be vary carefull that you don't overtighten the oil filter as it will bend the canister in the inside.

Yes, you add oil in that filler/breather in front of the stearing pedistal...where I'm pointing to on this old clunker.

Post back with any questions.
