I just installed a Char-Lynn power steering motor on my Farmall 300 and since I wasn"t able to buy the Char-Lynn pump I installed a power steering pump off a wrecked Dodge Caravan. The system doesn"t work. The pump puts out plenty of pressure so I don"t know if the motor is bad(the person I bought it from said he saw it work on a tractor)or if the pump isn"t adequate on either pressure or flow or both. Have any of you people used an automotive pump on a system like this?

I tapped into my 300"s factory hydraulics to run the pump. You can plumb it directly to your tractor"s hydraulic outputs. Or you can splice the pressure line coming from the hydraulic pump and install a flow control priority valve whihc will give you constant pressure and flow to the charlynn motor at all times...

The typical Char-Lynn torque generator used on tractors is p/n 217-1015. Requires 3.5 gpm @ max 1000 psi. The motor needs to be turning at about 100 rpm to be effective, this is relative to the gpm. When you turn the steering wheel the torque load increases so the pump has to be able to provide a higher pressure to maintain the same gpm for the motor rpm.

My pump is factory for Case 311B, 4 gpm, relief valve is 1050 psi. I put a gauge on the pump. The pressure required to provide the gpm to rotate the motor is about 150 psi. In normal driving, the pressure varies between 150 & 500 psi. Max pressure I have seen with the tractor in motion and about 1000 lbs in the FEL is about 700 psi. The motor is not capable of turning the wheels with even a light FEL load if the tractor is not moving, pump goes in relief.

I am now using ATF per the tractor mfr's manual but did run it on the tractor hyd pump using general purpose hyd oil for a year or so while the pump was down.

Thanks to both of you guys for your good information. I'll get the fittings to install a pressure gauge in the system so I'll know the actual pressure the pump is putting out and go from there.

Dont know if my experience will be relative here but I have been fighting a power steering problem on an old 4000 Ford with an automotive PS pump that the owner installed off a wrecked car. In this case I found the pump to be supplying only one quarter the required PSI needed to operate the system. I replaced the pump with a new remanufactured pump and now I have half enough PSI it helped but it's still not enough. I believe the problem is that a tractor requires more PSI and GPM than does an automobile.

I have CL pump on a IH400 that doesn't do the job. Was thinking salvaging pump ,cylinder and steering off a old John Deere combine. Has anyone done that?
