I just found out today that my 1466 i bought a couple of days ago only has 3 speeds instead of 4.
It is not a linkage problem so i guess it is off with the top plate to see what's wrong.I runs fine and does not make any noise in the 3 i have so i am not in any hurry to repair. Was their any 1466's that came w/3speeds, it did not have a TA originally.

on our 1086 the nut that keeps speed gears tight on the shaft came off. at first only one gear didn"t work then another an another.the longer you wait the more $$$ to fix.

What gear do you happen to be missing?

Are you absolutly sure it is not a linkage problem? With a little wear or misajustment, you won't be able to get first or fourth. Remove the sheetmetal over the steering column and unhook the linkage at the curved piece on the top of the vertical shaft running down to the gearbox. Turning the vertical shaft by hand, see if you can hit all four. If you can, it's the linkage. If not, work your way down. There's a coupler between the vertical shaft and the transmission cover that has two roll pins (special roll pins, I think) through it. These pins are well-known for working loose. Be entirely sure it is not the linkage before you set out to pull the cover, since that is a huge job (fuel tank/steering column assembly needs to be removed). By the way, all 1466's had four-speeds. It was the 15's that had the 3-speed. It was fairly common for any big International to come from the factory without a TA.
