Has anyone made a wood chipper? I have the basic part in a woods 6 ft mower. I can lay branches on the ground, and turn them into mulch very quick. Why not cut a hole above the blades and add a chute to feed the branches into the blades?

Hi Stan,

Don't know how much you got to chip, but I just bought a Troy-Bilt 6.5hp, 3" rated for $574 delivered. Hasn't arrived so I can't tell you anything yet.

I was looking for a chipper for adding wood chips to my compost for my garden and running the garden waste thru. I have free acess to short pieces of pine about 2" to 3" splits about 12" long or so that I want to run thru the TB chipper.

My SIL brought home a borrowed unit last year that was only 5hp and it did just great for what I needed.

I'm with the others on the mower. To many mods to make it useable as a chipper.

Yes, I made a wood chipper 1.5 years ago. It has a pull start 13HP briggs engine on it and it has a 23LB flywheel with two blades on it. It chips small sticks well, but not branches over 1.5" in diameter. I dont recommend using a belly mower on a lawn tractor for chipping wood it is not set up for it, you will ruin the cutting blade and maybe the deck.

A properly designed wood chipper has a controlled feeding system, like silage cutters did decades ago. Why else don't do it? Like the others said-Darwin idea!

Stan, there are some things a guy should steer clear of and I would suggest that this is one of them. You might better spend your time building an ark, Noah had pretty good luck with his.

Looks like another possible candidate for the Darwin awards.

Please pass my contact information on to your wife and family. I think that the Woods company and your tractor company will pay them big money to examine your patent for this device and to investigate the cause of your death and dismemberment. Duey, Cheatum and Howe Attys.

I would think one problem would be getting the limbs/brush through the chute. Without something to grab and pull the limbs I think you'd have a hard time getting them to the blades. Interesting idea, let us know how you come out.
