A friend and former coworker of mine from West Plains, Mo. was seriously injured yesterday (Wed.) in a freak accident. He was brush hogging when the loader on his tractor snagged a large wild grape vine (common in this area) which in turn broke out the top of a tree that fell on him striking the back of his head and neck paralizing him. His wife was out of town on a trip nad he was found approximately 36 hours later by a neighbor who decide to check on him after noticing his garage had been open and his tractor gone for about a day and a half. After an extensive search he found him by following the trail through the brush the out of control tractor had left. LaRoy was air lifted to a hospital in Springfield where they were going to put him on a ventilator tody. He is not expected to live. He had retired from the telephone company about 2 years ago so he could spend more time on his farm.

those vines are dangerous in reply to John *.?-!.* cub owner, 09-02-2004 16:53:22
i had a simular thing happen with a dozer a couple years ago, i was pushing back some boulders in a woodsroad when a fairly small vine got caught up in the track and pulled down a big dead tree branch ontop of the machine, i heard the cracking and looked up to see this huge mess of vines and branches coming down at me, that was scary, not much i could do, i just sorta covered my head with my hands and ducked, luckly nothing big got me, the bigger branches rested across the hood and fuel tank, took a while to get that mess off the dozer tho, i was very lucky that day, it could have been much worst

Mmm mmm mmm. Real sorry to hear that, about anyone. Real sorry. As someone else said, really no words. A reminder that at anytime, anywhere, no reason or warning, doing the simplest little everyday thing, I guess. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his, John.

Mark, as well.

Wasn"t there a series of topics and replies about dumb Dad"s, it"s OK for children to ride on or operate machinery etc? And something about of experienced and smart enough the operator can foresee and avoid all dangers. This terrible incident should at least be an example of what can happen to anyone. May even save a few lives by sharpening the rest of us up.

What a horrible accident.

My dad always cautioned me to watch for just that sort of thing, although we were cutting firewood most of the time -- he called them "widow-makers".

Thoughts and prayers to this man and his family at this time -- may God be with them all.

My thoughts and prayers are also with him and his family. I am not sure exactly what to say, like the posts before, sometimes there are just no words. for the family, the Bible verse Joshua 1:9 may be of some comfort, if any is to be found. may God be with them.
