Hi, For years I've dreamed of owning a John Deere tractor and I figure it's time to do something about it. I'm interested mainly in a early 28--40? John Deere D model. The model with the name John Deere on the radiator grill. I'm not sure when they changed it? From what I'm hearing it's probably a good idea to buy one that is already restored somewhat. I'm too old now to restore one now myself unless all it needs is paint. I don't have a ton of money but Ive seen a few on the internet from $2000--$7000. Somehwhere in between that seems reasonable? What is a good price for an excellant condition Model D and how do I go about finding one . I live in Virginia.

i've purchased several items from folks on this site and the ones i've dealt with seemed honest. i've also picked up a few items from ebay, but a lot of stuff there seems overpriced to me. how soon do you want to get this tractor? sometimes deals turn up at local auctions, but you may have to search a while to find an unstyled John Deere D.
also, i'm not sure exactly why you want a D (they are nice looking tractors) but they are heavier than a lot of tractors of that era (4000-5000 lbs.). if it's something you want to take to shows you need to consider how you will haul it. if you just plan on using it locally, then that isn't much of a concern.

There was a 1927 for sale in the photo ads on this site in Virginia they were asking $4500 which is about right as I sold one on e-bay for $4200
