Hi, I have an IH 400 that was made in Canton IL and the serial plate has stamped on it 503 S. Does the S stand for serial number? If it does, then this tractor must be the 3rd one ever made in 1954 as the serial numbers start at 501 in 1954 . Can anyone tell me if it is? I have read that the 400 didn't come into production until 1955 so is this one one of the experimental types that IH made to start the new 400 line?

I believe that this would indeed be the third one ever made. I believe production of the 400 was begun in late 1954. The letter "S" should mean it comes with a TA. There seems to be differing opinions of where the serial numbers break for model year designation.

You are right about having a TA, this tractor does have it. Did all of the 400's come with power steering like this one? Or was it an option Dale M.

The brass tag just above the serial plate says Canton 7425 and the serial plate says 503 S I live just 25 miles from Canton Il. Dale M

Just a thought...maybe the brass plate with Canton and the number MIGHT indicate that the tractor was originally shipped to the Canton plant for use as a plant tractor...maybe in the development of certain implements. And maybe not.

Char-Lynn and Behlen both made P/S attachments for Farmalls, but P/S was not avail. on the 400's as an "OPTION". It could be dealer installed or even owner installed later, Behlen P/S was installed on the 350/450's as an Option at the factory however. Check that tag again and I think You'll find it says CHICAGO, IL, not Canton. IH's CANTON, IL. plant only made tillage equip. No tractors. Your 400 was actually made about 100+/- miles north of Canton at the FARMALL PLANT in Rock Island, IL. Right on the banks of the muddy Sylvan Slough which ran between IL and Arsenal Island and merged into the Mississippi River. # 503 will probably get Your name in Redpower Magazine as owning the earliest Farmall 400. They keep a list of earliest & latest tractors & Owners.

I pretty sure that was an option and maybe not available on the first ones. I have seen many different PS setups. I don't have PS on mine.I guess I should qualify that I'm speaking about Farmall 400 Row Crop's, not the International 400 which is the Standard or Wheatland model.

You might try to get ahold of Guy Fay over on the farmall board.
