I ham looking at buying a 1973 510 hoe it has no low gears 1-4 but has high gears 5-8 on the power shift, it has reverse in low 1-4. The owner said that it had low 1-4 untill he changed all the fluids and filters the drove down the road and used high gears for the first time 5-8. when he p-ulled off the road there was no low side. any sugestions to fixing this or should i stay away?

My first thought would be to run away....unless you are a glutton for punishment and want a big job ahead of you.. Those powershifts are very labor intensive when it comes to repairs...as well as expensive parts wise... Engine has to come out ..as well as the seat/top cover assembly. Then a clutch pack assembly comes out the front, and a clutch and brake pack assembly comes out the top. There are numerous clutch packs that can leak, resulting in worn "fiber" discs and steel plates...and several planetary gear sets that can detonate, resulting in an empty wallet. Then when it is up and running, you have a titanic of a backhoe that digs well, but is not very user friendly as a loader. Being that old, its a 510..not a 510C
