If the tractor has other identification marks,I see absolutely nothing wrong wwith it.---i.e.Some Massey Harris tractors have the serial no. and model stamped on the transmission top.No biggie to me.

Seems alarming at first thought_BUT:
I have a B that my grandad replaced the seat on_so the tag is gone. I have a doner with a good seat wrong year that I will put on it tag and all. I would rather have the one he threw away. I am still looking for a seat bracket of the right year because the wrong year bugs me, right year wrong number does not.
I think it is a deception to a sell a tractor as an original cherry when it has been drug up, pieced together & painted and all those that recondition tractors have there own level of honisty or deception. Seems like most of these plates would come from doners and just go to help complete a recondition or resteration.

I would think that there are more important things to worry about. If someone had sinister intentions, they would almost have to go out and steal a Oliver 88 Diesel to put the plate on.
Just be glad that somebody saved the serial plate, before sending the tractor off to the foundry to be melted down.

Yeah, Rauville, that"s how I see it. Of course, there will always be those in favor of a new Govt. agency, the Serial Plate Police!

I have really enjoyed some of the name plate collections I have seen off of old machinery. Some of the old ones are quite ornate. I suppose it WOULD have been better, though, if they had all been melted down with the old iron they came from!

If he is the legal owner of the tag, I would think it is his to sell, destroy or give away as he sees fit.

Hey Kent-
A "stolen" tractor is only one possibility, however, in the process of restoring an old tractor, many times the ID tag is worn away or even missing. Restorers like myself are always concerned with an original piece of the equipment like the tag and if need be, will replace it with a repro or in this case from another tractor. I know of a gentleman who reproduces Dearborn tags for the farm implements and there is certainly nothing shady in his intentions. If you have ever seen the ID tags on plows, harrows, cultivators, combines, etc. etc. you see them worn or missing. I have used a "repro" tag on one of my projects and only stamped the correct model number, but for the serial number I stamped my SS number for my ID purposes. Bear in mind that records of old pieces of farm equipment are long gone, too. HENRY (the Deuce) FORD II was good at destroying documents and old Ford tractor/Dearborn Equipment records were included. Also, almost every dealer that may still have any type of record are long gone too. What I would recommend for any one with an old tractor is to register it on boards like this (see Tractor Registry) so at least there is some type of record for the future. Just my .02 cents worth.

Ok then what about the companys that make new plates for tractors. Sometimes the old ones and so bad they can not be read. Is that a bad thing too, that a bad guy will buy a new one and install on a hot repainted tractor. I save all the tags off the dead bone yard bound tractors I get rid of. There is nothing left when they leave from here to go to thte yard. So is it bad I save the tags, or is it good I keep them so know bad person gets them at the junk yard.

People who steal tractors do so to resell them. They obviously cannot sell them with the correct serial number as this is the ID used by law enforcement to recover the tractor and prosecute the crimminals.

So the bad guys buy a phony serial number tag to replace the original tag. They are then free to sell the tractor without worry of being caught and the new buyer now owns a stolen tractor.

You might want to contact e-bay and/or local law enforcement and advise them.

Why would you want to buy a serial number unless the tractor you have is stolen?.

Would "For the heck of" it sufice? By the way, "for the heck of it" hasn't as of yet been deemed to be criminal activity in the township I live in.

With some brands, there are in fact RECORDS of serial numbers. Sometimes, it is also possible to fabricate a complete, RARE LOW PRODUCTION tractor, like say a HI CROP, from parts. Normally, a RARE, COLLECTABLE tractor, from one of the brands with records available, (like say JOHN DEERE) can be authenticated as being genuine and original by it"s serial number plate. For some strange reason, it then makes the serial number plate itself the most collectable part of the tractor. If someone were to build a tractor from parts and try and pass it off as an original, you then enter the same realm as someone who forges an Old Master Painting and tries to sell it as "original"! So far as I know, NO ONE sells replacement JOHN DEERE tags. On the other hand, high crop or other scarce Farmalls must not be as valuable to collectors, since replacement, blank tags for Farmalls are readily available. Perhaps that"s why they are not as valuable! NO ONE CAN AUTHENTICATE as to whether or not they are originals! Perhaps with MM or OLIVER or FORD it"s even worse?

I know of several people in my area that have made plaques of such plates on a fancy wooden background, and I sure can"t see any harm in it, as long as the tractors have been scrapped, and he hasn"t STOLEN the plate off of someone else"s tractor.

It"s kinda like guns and ammo, or booze and knives, legal to sell (of course with certain restrictions), but pretty much out of the seller"s hand once they"re sold.

Why do you assume the ONLY reason somone would want one is for a stolen tractor? That thought did not even cross my mind, since I know of people that collect the plates. It"s sorta like having a piece of the real thing, and they take up a lot less space!

I assumed the ONLY reason someone would want to buy an incorrect serial number plate is to replace the one on their stolen tractor, I haven't heard or seen anybody do anything else with them.

Well in my opinion for what it is worth that ruined his restoration and the representation became fraudulant. If he had the money time and werewithal to do a proper trailer queen restoration he could have had an origianl serial tag made. If he did not know the actual # the unknown digits should be replaced with x's No different than replacing a VIN Plate on a road vehicle.

Would it be anymore ruined or fraudulent than the fellow that restores a 1939 tractor and then paints it with a high gloss basecoat-clearcoat paint?

Yes, it would. Making a tractor look better than new isn't fraud. Making a tractor into somthing it wasn't, and then misrepresenting the creation as being ORIGINAL and AUTHENTIC IS FRAUD. Especially if the serial number plate was originally blank, and an authentic serial number is engraved upon it, so that the tractor can be passed off as original, when the seller of the tractor had never had more than a collection of parts and never ownership of the authentic original tractor.
