I had tractor for sale and recieved an email from the UK.
He asked a couple questions about the tractor and for my phone # which I provided. Recieved a call a few days later from UK and he tried to beat down the price but finaly agreed to mine. He asked if I would prefer a check or money transfer into my acct., which immediately set off a warning bell. I said I'd prefer the check but that the tractor would remain locked in my garage until it has positivley cleared, he agreed and would be in the US in about 3-4 weeks to inspect the tractor and pick up another one in New England, both to be shipped from Boston. He was very knowlegable about the tractor and I did a reverse phone check on his number and it is listed to a business in his name. Everything seems pretty legit, but with all the overseas scams going on, it makes me wonder.
Has anyone got any info on a possible scam working this way.
Thanks for any info.

Re: Scam or not??? FYI - HOW TO AVOID !!! in reply to Gunther, 08-26-2004 16:45:18
I have talked to my buyer twice and several emails to work out details. He has sent the check but my bank says it may take 15 - 18 days to clear, so he decided to have me hold the check and he'll bring cash. My bank said in any future transactions like this, set up an account or clear out an existing one, and have them wire transfer the funds into it, then transfer it out. that way there are no funds in it for anyone to play games with. This could probably also be done as an escrow account that would also protect the buyer in case the item was not as advertised.
Just thought you might like this info, in case you appear to have a legit overseas buyer.

Talked to a 25 year in business legitimate ag dealer in Baton Rouge, LA. yesterday about a Ford 5000 I was looking at.

He said that he shipped 15 to Thailand recently and has been doing so for several years. Says they take all he can get.

So then I go to a Thai web site, and sure nuf the 5000 is extremely popular over there liken unto the 8n here. Said they were easy to fix and parts were readily available and all.

You might think that it is a real pain to go thru the export regs stuff, but apparently there is a real market overseas for older tractors. The dealer said that Thai's pay him more than yanks do , ask no questions, and take the tractors as it. In the Thai ad, they said they'd sell them as is or would fix em up, whatever the customer wanted.

So, you never know.

Clear the check, talk to your banker, and when he gives the nod, go for it.

Mark

www.gulfsouthequip.com. The 5000 in the ad was sold a year ago. Says he keeps the really nice ones (which is seldom) and the rest go. Too bad.

The Thai site is www.mitalai.com/EN_UsedTractors.htm.

Why should any of this set off warning bells? If the guy pays you the money, what is your problem?
The scam is when you don"t get the money and the tractor is collected and gone, or you are stupidly paying out good funds from your account against a dud cheque (or whatever) from the other party. Both these scams require an idiot to lose their goods/money.
GBP is just as good as USD but make sure you get paid at the right exchange, or in USD.
I am using paypal or transferring funds quite often for goods and, thankfully, have not yet found a bent US vendor.
BTW the exchange rate is such that it is a good time to be converting GBP into USD goods.
Over here, things often cost the same in £ as the # of dollars US - good old rip-off Britain!
Like just bought an item from the US - £75 in the UK, £38 from my plastic money to have one delivered all the way from the States!!!
Regards, RAB

You'd really be in trouble if the guy was offering you our Canadian dollars. Then you'd really need to sweat a bit.

Talk to your bank about a letter of credit. Have the seller comply with the letter of credit. Everything goes through the bank and you don't get scamed.

If he"s travelling this far, I"m sure that he wouldn"t mind travelling a few extra miles to your banker "to protect himself" by having your banker notorize a bill of sale, and while you"re conveniently there, have him convert his British Pounds or Traveller"s checks into US Currency, then hand it to you in cash to deposite into your bank, before you hand him the notorized bill of sale and keys to the tractor. If he doesn"t go for it, hand him a phone book, open it to "taxi cabs headed to the local airport", then point out the window to the payphone down the road. You"ll never see him again either way, so be careful, and don"t turn over an account number to anything.

Gunther,

I drop money all the time; already have to some of the guys here on this forum.

I know that this makes the seller a little uneasy, but it is as fast as you can get.

Since you've already agreed on a check; do like you said, set on the thing for a month or 6 weeks to make sure all is okay.

I don't really hear any warning bells going off other than the UK thing and that could be completly legit.

Dunno,

Allan

Guy sounds sincere so far but just make sure check clears. I have been inindunated with the scammers also. I got one Nigerian on a string now and he will no doubt send me a fake bank check via Fed Express at a good expense to them. Had several so far spend 60 bucks each package just to use up their resoures. I got 7 fake checks in my garage hanging upo just for laughs but the sad thing is some fall for it. They offer to send much more than price and ask to transfer balance to them(thats the sting).

Sounds like a scam to me.....it would cash USA dollars or there would be no sale. Just my 2 cents.
