Hi, I am a economic development director that has been offered a lifetime worth of collectable antique farm machinery. We are thinking of setting up a show room and making our community a tourisum destination site anybody have any thoughts how this may work?

I am also an Econ. Dev. Dir. in northern Maine. I am part of a group that started a farm museum about two years ago. Here"s the deal. You won"t have a successful venture unless you have a lot of volunteers behind you. You need solid, long term community support. Don"t be a one man show. You can"t do it all. Use your position to help underwrite the finances of the project. Be sure you are a 501 c 3 corporation. Be a stand-alone organization. Accept the idea you will always need money. It won"t be a self funding project without the above.
In two years, we took out a 50K mortgage, paid out oil bill, made thousands of $ of improvements to our building and have written the mortgage down to 29K. That represents a lot of hard work by a core group of 60 or more people.
Go for it, keep your feet on the ground, keep close track of the money and build a BIG SUPPORT group.
Chas

What everyone else is saying, Brian, is that you should give me a call and I'll haul all that stuff up to my place to store it for ya. And I won't even charge ya much.

to be economical any venture must be able to pay it's own expenses and show a profit for the owners. My opinion, a tractor museum will do neither.

Don"t you have to be able to spell tourism to be an economic development director? Just kidding....Look at Pioneer Village in Nebraska for guidance on how to do it. JMHO, but being somewhat near another attraction and/or a large interstate highway would help. Check out Agricultural Hall of Fame in Bonner Springs, Kansas.

Tim, have you ever had any first hand dealings with an economic developer?

That"s pretty close, except he would also charge you a fee for selling your produce.

Just about every small town throughout the midwest has a very similar attraction. Most of these are associated with, and a part of, the local historical society. The people who visit these museums are for the most part local residents of the community. Occasionally, you will get some visitors who once lived in the community,or have relatives who live there and are visiting. Occasionally you will get a visit from total strangers who just happen to be passing through on there way to somewhere else.
As far as being a tourist attraction, I would invite you to visit the Pioneer Village museum, located in Minden, Nebraska. This is a very large and quite interesting museum, filled with early day and even more modern farming and other artifacts. While this is a very interesting place to visit, I don"t think it has ever done very much for the community it is located in, tourists come to visit the museum and then journey on to some place else, most of them pay very little attention to the actual city it is located in.

Brian L.,

Rustyfarmall is right about the Pioneer Village example. I was just there for a day and a half, and afraid I didn"t even notice the town it is in (Minden, NE). While the museum is a great idea, I doubt it would do much for "economic development" in your community.

My $0.97 (.02 + tax) worth,
