A number of years ago I saw what resembled a small combine - 6-7' wide - with a scyle bar mower on the leading edge of a conveyor belt channeling the cuttings to a central exit chute at the rear of the machine.I believe it was powered with a 4 cylinder Wisconsen and had either a single or dual wheel steering axle on the rear. What is it called and who made them?

That Massey looks alot like the Hesston 260 Haybine I ran a few years back as my first self propelled machine. I was new to the area and didn"t know anyone yet and bought it from a farmer that retired. Drove it home on the road 20 miles at 3 per hour. Waved alot on the trip though. Used it 4 or 5 seasons until Investing in new drapes was going to be too much. Sold it for the Wisconsin motor to be put in a bobcat.

This is a Massey Harris swather stuck in the back yard of my rental property. No idea how to move it without cutting it up.

Yes, a draper swather. It uses a canvas belt to gently move the grain crop to a windrow for harvesting a week or two later. Usefull in crops where green weeds would be a problem and also can reduce the danger of storm dammage.

It sounds to me like an early self propelled machine that was used to cut, crimp, and windrow hay. Commonly called a self-propelled windrower. New Holland and Hesston were the primary manufacturers of these.

Thanks Allen, maybe, it was being used to harvest wildflower seeds.

Don,

Well, if it was pulling seeds, it had to have been a combine of some sort then.

Sorry, can't finger it.

Don,

Was it a swather? Sure sounds like one of the early ones. No combining to 'em tho.

Weinersteiger (spelling) was the make. Nifty little test plot harvester. I don't think they thresh, but they did have that darn old VW engine. I saw one several years ago when I was still at AC. It was sitting in the engineering shop at the time. Good friend of mine also ran one for Agricore. I could find out more info if you want to know. Cheers.
