johndeereman,

Bob and Allan are right. It"s supposed to sound that way! Don"t you love it. Only better sound is when that B is under a heavy load!

Enjoy,

We had problems like that with our G; it was usually that the bushings were worn on the throttle shaft in the carburetor, or there was a leak on the intake gasket.

Check the plugs.... I have a 520 that likes to foul the left hand plug. Gradually starts missing more and more (especially at idle) until I pull it out for a cleaning or replacement.

Hi JDM,

Bob has hit the nail right on the head. That tractor is supposed to sound like that.

Be glad it does, you have a unique tractor and many of us really like the way those old gals sound when they idle. :>)

The newer ones sound sweet too, but there is just something about that old "skip one once in awhile" sound that is nice to hear.

Believe me, people envy you and your old B.

Regards,

Allan

John Deere A's have trouble with cam bearings not the B's .The B's don't really have bearings the cam runs in cast housings that have oil pressure feed to them.

What you have described sounds like a normal John Deere 2 cyl. with a single induction carb. at an idle the 2nd cyl. doesn't get a good fuel mixture so they don't run smooth until a load is applied. The models starting in 1953 like the model 50 and 60 have dual induction carbs. and they run much smoother.

The are called "poppin Johnnies" for a reason! Due to the uneven firing arrangement between the 2 cylinders, the RH cylinder tends to get a leaner gasoline mixture, especially at idle or light load, and some misfire is normal.

On the numbered series of Deere 2 cylinders, this issue was addressed by going to a 2 barrel carburetor and manifold, so each cylinder got the correct mixture.

Boy that sure eases my mind. I sold an older B the other day on EBAY, and me being a farmall man, I spent over a week looking for the other two cylinders. I think if I could have found them, that tractor would have sounded about right. As it was, I about gave it away cause I told the man who bought it that I just couldn"t get it to run right. Silly me.
