Just need some advice. I have old ford 8n that just isn"t quite enough power to do what i like to do. Am considering a 1986 massey ferguson. Need something with enough hp to bush hog some pretty thick stuff and to plant food plots for deer and turkey. Also small enough to do odd jobs around house and to be able to haul behind 1500 chevrolet. Is massey ferguson the right kind of tractor? What price range? How many hours is too many on used tractor? Thanks for any and all help that any of you can suggest?

I just looked at that 240. Seems like a nice tractor. Are a couple of other older Masseys on there that look nice for what they're asking. A couple of months ago I saw a couple of 1130's on Ebay and one seemed real nice for what was bid, but had a problem with the rears being locked together (bald fronts). I figured in good shape $7K, but with the rears locked could cost me some $$$ to fix. Thought could be linkage, but since the guy ran it like that for a couple of seasons, more than likely time and $$$. I figured $7K minus repairs and that would be my high bid. My bidding quickly got out of control with whom ever got it, and I hope that they made out easy on the rearend. I bailed out. Your 240 looks like it's worth it, and I hope that you get it for that. As for me, I'm in no hurry, know of a pair hiding in weeds now taller than both of their stacks. Good luck.

You will be extremely happy with the mf240. I have owned a1988 model for the last 10 years and have not found a task it could'nt do. Perkins diesels are unbeatable. I paid $9500 for mine, had 500 hours on it and a 732 front end loader. The tractor now has just over 1100 hours on it. $6000 sounds like a good price today. Is this the 240 on Ebay? Dave

Just wondering if you"ve heard that the 240 were made in europe and that when first out they had some problems with them. This tractor has over 4000 hrs on the hours meter but he is not sure it is working. that sounds high but is it? He say tractor runs great and strong and there is no leaks or anything to speak of. 6000 still sound fair? Thanks

Thanks. Yes the tractor is on e-bay. I have bought a truck on ebay before and was very pleased. Other than using tractors I don"t know very much about the mechanics of them as long as they are working properly, that is my problem. If you get a chance to look at it tell me what you think. It would be a great help to me. Just don"t want to purchase it and it need a major overhaul. Any other comments or suggestions are welcomed.

You"re looking at one of the best series of small tractors ever made.... The 240 is a descendant of the 35/50, 135/150,..... line. They are about as good as it gets. They are designed as utility tractors, not a "downsized row crop" like most of Massey"s competition at that time. Very reliable engine. Good tranny/live power/hydraulics. Multi-power is a negative in my book. You are looking at a major increase in "worth" also. A tractor of that investment doesn"t need to be a mechanical nightmare. A lot of the utility tractors of recent years, ended up in the hands of people that have no idea what they"re doing, construction use, Used in place of a NEEDED much bigger tractor, the list goes on. Look it over good. make sure you"re getting what you want. You will be very happy with a 240. HUGE increase in usable power over an 8N. Almost the same sized package. Good choice.

Thanks. It seems to be in great condition. The size is good and the power even better. My question I guess is what should I look for as far as if its mechanically sound without many major problems? is 6000 for 1986 fair price? Thanks again.

It helps if you can get by to see the tractor in person. Then you check the obvious. Does it start OK? Does it smoke much when running? Clutch and brakes feel OK? Sheet metal banged up? (That might tell you how hard it was used/abused) Any oil leaks? If you can"t see it, at least ask those questions of the seller. There"s nothing that can"t be fixed. You just don"t want the expense of doing that right after you buy it.
$6000 sounds about right. Seen "em sell higher and lower.
