Looking for an older truck (less than $3,000) for general towing, hauling, etc in OHio, nothing major.
Have seen the following trucks and I'd like your input:

1988 Chevy 1500, V8, 120K, clean/no rust, $2100

1992 Chevy 1500, V8 with 50K on motor, 120K total, 4x4, some rust $2500

1994 GMC 2500, 6.5L Diesel, 190K, some dents, no rust, new pump and injectors. $3,000

All are just 2 door type, nothing fancy...
I'm partial to the GMC 2500, but thought I'd get your input....
Thanks

All three are poor choces. The diesel, especially, is garbage.

I've driven Chevy trucks all my life. For your particular needs I'd suggest a '95 or earlier K2500 with a 454 and 4L80E transmission. This will have the NP241 transfer case. This is a bulletproof combination and will tow/haul anything and ask for more. It will also have the 8,600 GVWR and 17,500 lb GCWR weight ratings which get you the 1 ton front and rear axles, better brakes, oil and AT coolers, HD cooling system, etc. Most of these will have the factory tow package which is a Reese Class V hitch and 7 pin connector.

I have one, exactly as described above, and would not trade it for 10 of anything else.

I found lots of trucks fitting your price range at Truck Trader Online. You can also search Auto Trader Online. Truck Trader has advanced search options specific to looking up trucks (truck style and weight class), Auto Trader lets you search for more specific details (engine type, transmission type, fuel type, number of doors, etc...).

It sounds like you just want a work truck that isn't going to be used for transportation. I think you're on track looking at that 3/4 ton GMC. You appear to be loyal to GM, which I won't try to talk you out of. However, I'd decide if I want a diesel truck or a Chevy/GMC first, because I've heard very few nice words about GM and their diesel trucks. On the other hand, Cummins is a known, proven brand and the International engines in the Ford trucks also have a pretty good track record. A GM gas-powered truck would probably be pretty good though.

What I'd look for:
3/4 ton; 4x4 would be handy at times; 8' bed preferred for a working truck; Gas if GM, Dodge or Ford if diesel

What I'd avoid at all costs:
GM with diesel; Ford with E4OD automatic transmission

I've been shopping for a used truck in Ohio for the last few months, so I know there are a lot out there to choose from (depending what you're looking for). Good luck, and be sure to try those online search engines -- they can turn up some nice trucks.

None of the above.
I owned a 93' 6.5 diesel. Had 70,000 on it when I got rid of it. Had been through 4-5 injection pumps and I believe 3 auto trannies. Used it on the farm and did alot of towing. Albeit a strong motor, it is just prone to spend alot of time in the shop unless GM has made an update. Only had mine until 97' so dont know what happened after that.
I personnally would not bother with an older gas for towing much more than my lawn mower. Just my opinion.
I would reccommend Ford with the Navistar diesel or a Dodge with the Cummins. Both are awesome engines. Known many of those to have 250,000 trouble free miles. I followed my GMC with a F-350 w/Powerstroke. Has 150,000 trouble free miles. Only problems were the trans and rear diff which were both as a result of my abuse.
If you are a GM loyalist I under stand. My dad used to be as well. That is until I bought my Ford.

My$.02

Here is the thing about the 6.5L and the injection pumps. They do only last about 100k or so which isn't bad but a lot of the time it is something other than the pump that is bad. Like yours being replaced 4 times, anyone ever think huh must be something else? Lots of little things on those pumps that make it look like it is the pump itself. Need better mechanic I'd say. And as far as a good old 350 you can't ask for much more. Solid motor with adequate power. Not gonna pull 20k around but for normal pulling use will work fine.

Buy the 94,the 92 sounds good but the trans & transfer case are going to need work soon. And front end may need CV joints soon also. besides if the diesel go boom you always find a 454 to replace it
