I'll be inheriting either a Case D or a John Deere 720 and will use it mostly for snow removal and log hauling. I'm wondering whether to use one of these or purchase a different tractor.

Purchase a different tractor.

First, everyone else is assuming a snowblower. They have their place but we get 12'-16' of snow here every winter and everyone, including me, use a loader and box blade to manage snow.

I also log with mine. The loader is invaluable for picking up logs. Attach a shackle bracket to the bucket. You'll want a stout 3 point for dragging logs (you need to pick up the front end of the log slightly to drag them). This means you need live hydraulics. You also want a WFE.

Be sure to use www.ultraseal.com in the front tires, at least, as logging stubble is tough on tires.

To the best of my knowlege, all 720s have "Independent PTO". If the Case D was made during the last 2 years of production, it too has "IPTO". Otherwise, it has "Transmission PTO". "Live" or "Independent" PTO is essential for operating a snowblower!

Does either one have live PTO? Case would be steadier power on PTO that 2 cylinder, but that shouldn't bother too much on snowblower.

Is the 720 Deere gas, diesel, LP, all fuel, standard chassis, row crop narrow, row crop wide, satrting engine or electric start? Tire, size, condition, does it still have the three point hitch and options?

The 720 is gas, row crop narrow ( I believe ) electric start, tires good condition though it has a cracked manifold. 2 point hitch and drawbar.

The 720 is an old but fine working machine. It will hold it"s value as well. Plus the two cylinder sound makes it the "Harley Davidson" of antique tractors. The gasser was fairly efficient for a gasoline power machine and a good starter in cold weather if in tune. Reproduction top links can be had for snowblower mounting. New manifolds from Deere and China can be had. Unless working it hard in hot weather. Leave the valve in the "Hot" position. While I"m biased and bleed green, a decent 720 is a good old tractor.
