Need help.......again

I posted last week about my Ford 861 running rough and then not starting. Got some excellent advice and finally got her running.

But..... after running about a half hour, it starts missing and bogging down under load. Gets progressively worse. Made me think it might be overheating. Unfortunately the temp gauge doesn't work but it's got plenty of fluids. I'm wondering if the thermostat is stuck.

Anyone have any ideas where to look next?

Temp gauges/ sending units are real cheap, very easy to replace on those machines. That is what I would do first. Strongly recommended. Very.

Then you know if it is a real overheating problem, or the tractor just gets to operating temp & something else, like the capacitor or coil or gas vent is acting up.

Too many things to guess at without the temp gauge working.

Next time it happens, remove the gas cap. If that fixes it then the vent is plugged.

If not, then replace the coil. Be sure you use the right coil or you will burn the points.

Oh yea, get the temperature gauge fixed pronto or you will asking how to rebuild an engine next. 9 times out of 10 it's the sending unit. If not, you can buy a new mechanical gauge/sender for cheap at NAPA etc.

To check the t-stat, boil it on the stove covered in water and have a meat thermometer in the pan. It should be fully open by the time it reaches the spec'd temperature.

Carefully remove the radiator cap and place the meat thermometer in the top of the radiator next time you think it is hot.
