A friend sent me this request, but I can't help him. I thought maybe soemone on here could.

I've got a magneto (FM X1B7E) that won't fire. It's off a Wisconsin engine (model AENL). I took it apart and I don't know how to remove the center shaft. Don't really want to remove it, but it's pretty dirty and has to come off. Where can a guy find the disassembly/testing/installing procedeures for this rascal..... .been looking high and low and cannot find it on the net, and really didn't want to buy a manual for this one project. I'm probably just not typing the correct phrase to get me where I need to go..

John, I have had probably a 100 of those Fairbanks stripped completely apart over the years and they are not too hard. Take the nut off the end of the shaft and remove gear. Now the tricky part. The next piece is the impulse trip and it is on a tapered keyway. You need to pry up on it while hitting on the end of the shaft to pop it loose. Next, take off the plate that the points sit on and also remove the coil. Rmove snap ring from shaft on front side and remove shaft. Make sure you replace the oil seal in reasembly. Steve

Yes, and if the impulse don't work, you'll play hell getting it started or worse it'll do like it done me and kickback whiplashing your fingers in the process (THAT HURTS)..... ...

John,

I can email a copy of the manual to you for that engine. It has a little about setting up the mag timing, but I didn't see where it has complete overhaul procedures for the mag.

I have a Wico magneto here that is the match up for most all Wisconsin single cylinder engines including the AE series (as well as others). Single cylinder, bottom mount, twin-lug hookup to the engine, etc. I have removed my email hide from my post so if you need the mag (assuming the one you have is fried), then feel free to contact me.

Why does he need to remove the center shaft? The condensor, the points, and even the coil can be relaced without removing the shaft

Unless he can recharge the magnets, it's probably best left alone. Reassembling the impulse is an art in itself!
