The higher speed, 1000 rpm pto is for use withhigh hp requirement pto equipment! For example, you would use 1000 rpm most likely with a 20 foot batwing brush cutter, and you'd likely use 540 with a 9 foot moco or a small square baler!

The 1000 rpm speed can carry a lot more hp than can the 540. What the other posters said---75-80 hp is about tops for 540 rpm! While even 95 or 100 hp is possible with 540, you are beginning to enter the region where you run the risk of breaking the pto shaft. Many tractors 115 hp up originally only came with the 1000 rpm setting? They weren't expected to be used with low hp requirement equipment.

One of the most resisted tractor features of all time, however was the 1000 rpm pto! For some reason, it was instantly hated when it came out, sometime around 1959.

Out of curiousity, what tractor are we talking about here, and what sorts of implements?

To add to what JMS said, tractors started out with 540 rpm pto's. It is difficult to build a pto shaft strong enough to transmit more that 75-80hp at that size & speed, so for bigger tractors they developed 1000 rpm.

On small tractors, _most_ implements are designed for 540 pto, a very few things were special built for 740 or 1000 rpm. I believe these are perhaps more common in Japan & China, and the different speed options came along for the ride, tho rarely used here.

Some folks will throttle the tractor back to 1/2 engine speed & use the 1000rpm to pull light loads, saving some fuel. Just be careful not to: 1. Lug your engine down & make it work too hard; 2. Speed up the engine speed while the pto is engaged & wreck something. You do not ever want to run a 540 implement at 1000rpm. Bad things happen.

Tractors are provided with 540 and 1000 rpm pto to match the speed of the implement. Mfr's went to 1000 rpm because the 540 cannot transmit as much hp (torque) as the 1000. A 540 shaft built to transmit 150 hp would be too heavy for you to lift to connect to the pto. Regarding the diff lock- use it to prevent getting stuck! Two wheels locked together will get you through more mud than a single wheel. Yes, when locking the rear wheels together, you lose turning ability. The tractor will tend to go straight ahead. But you are not hurting anything by using it constantly while going straight ahead. If I am doing tillage work in wet ground, I run the diff lock at all times, and it snaps off when I hit the brakes to make a turn.

just do as you're told I guess. The diferential needs to be unloced for turning or it will be hard to steer.
