As stated below, if you are using an offset disk, you should turn left. 2 reasons. You will break the right front disk if you turn right, as the disk will dig in very deeply. When you turn left you can leave the disk down in the plow position because when you start to turn, the disk will pop up almost out of the ground, ans after the turn will go right back to plowing deep. The Owners Manual for the Series 219 Offset says "Operator should plan all turns to his left."

I alway disk to create messages for aliens flying over. When I hear people talking about the direction you should turn when disking, I get scared.

With some disks you will break the right hand end disc on the front gang if you turn to the right too sharply. It will also create a ridge as TimFL
indicated.

When using a one-way disc plow you should back furrow around the fence every so often to prevent the ridge of dirt. Same for the center of the field and leaving a wide, deep, furrow over time.

Kelvin,

I've always tried to turn in the direction that I would like to go.

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. :>)

And if you come to a wet spot, or the river, you should turn around.

I change, just depends on where I am in the field. Mostly with a disc I like to look over my left shoulder. So much equipment runs to the right that on the few things I can look left, I do. It gives me a chance to get the kinks out of my back.

You didn't say what kind of disc, is it a disc plow? Or a disc harrow? With a disc harrow, I always started at one side of the field and went back and forth, at one end you would turn left, at the other end you would turn right.

Using a one way way disk? The dirt is still heaped against the fences in my place from a previous renter who always threw the dirt the same way.

Hi Kelvin,
I can't think of any reason you absolutly should turn to the left. I was just disking today, depending on where I came into the field I would start making the turns to the right or left. Once I have a pattern I usually stick with it.

Having said that, I prefer to always steer with my left hand. I always look back over my right shoulder. My impliment and loader controls are all on the right sides of my tractors. Taking all this into account, I prefer to turn to the right.

I also always get on and off the tractors on the left side, but this has nothing to do with the turning. More to do with horses, doors and loader controls.

Have fun, Grant.

Need the weight for traction. Do not like to use CaCl and the cow smells too much.

Me too. All you said plus my neck seems to work better with my head to the right and, thinking about it, it just may be the location of the controls.

Course I had a'74 Int'l 464 with shuttle shift and as I recall most everything was on the left.....been awhile since I sat on it....maybe that was just the shifter on the left and draft/position on right. Don't remember where the ind. pto lever was.

Given the status of things in the world I've heard that a lot are thinking of going to the "left".

Depends what kind of disk. If it is an offset type disk and you dont want to lift it up at each turn, you turn left because with the way the disk is set it will "pop" up out of the ground. It also matches your blade throws so you end up with a smooth field when done. For others it just what makes you comfortable.

He probably only has one good steering brake and thats the way he turns. I have several tractors with 1 good brake.
