Hello. I just bought 2 very good Firestone 14 X 26 tires. Is the old style 14" equal to a current 16.9"? When did manufacturers convert to the sizes that you see today like 13.6 and 16.9 and stop making 11", 12", or 14"?

The new style marking refers to the cross-sectional width of the tire (the bulge), rather than the rim width. Change was made about 4 decades ago. This guy says 1950s, I think early 60s, I don't know for sure. Dad's WD45 had 13-28 when he bought it in 1956, but anyway- it was a few decades ago.

Around 1955 tire manufacturers adopted the sizes that you see today, such as 13.6 x 38 and 16.9 x 34. According to a tire chart I've seen, the old style 14" (1938 to 1960) is equal to a current 16.9 tire width.
