I was gone to Detroit for 10 days, my son was getting married. Got home last night about 9:00 pm and noticed dust and tree limbs and the smell of smoke in the air. This morning I went out and check and the field behind my house was all black. They got is stopped at my fence line by cutting a fire break with a disc. Went over and talked to the neighbor and it started on a combine about five miles away. It burned right up to the neighbors lawn and then went over the top of the house. The fireman figure the house didn't burn because of the metal roof and asbestos siding. A total of 3000 acres burned with about 700 not combined. No buildings or people hurt which is good. Winds were about 40 mph they could only stand and wait while it burned. I had let my cows eat the back pasture down pretty good so that I could put them in the front pasture while I was gone or it would have burned right through our place. My barn was full of hay, my 62 Ford Galaxie and old Ford pickup in there. They were all covered with ashes and shoot which blew in through the cracks. I'm darn lucky a spark didn't get in or it would have been gone.

Glad you came through OK- those things can be scary. Was helping a friend combine in eastern Washington several years ago- very dry year, several fires in the area- everyone would drop what they were doing and go help fight the fires. Lots of wheat and machinery lost that year.

Glad everythhing worked out.

Around home the neighbour and I hook up to the Molboard plow and run a few furrows. If we get a lightning strike or some one drops a cigarette but we have breaks in the field. I always plow near my out buidings when there is wheat stubble.

Hey Bob,

You are one lucky man. Next year take the time to disk a few trips around your property as things are drying out. This will give you a place to make a stand. When the fire is approaching, you can run along the disk line toward the fire with a road flare and inprove the buffer between your property and the fire. Just be sure the fire is close enough that what you are doing won't increase the danger to other property.

And if the firefighters make it to your property they will thank you too. They would like to make a stand on property that they have a good chance to save without getting their tail feathers singed. Out west it is called "Defensable Space."

Bob - I'm real glad to hear that you and your property are o.k. Thankfully "Murphys Law" was on vacation too!

Hope things get back to normal for you and your neighbors soon.
