Its insurance time again and my old company wants to hit me with another rate increase so I am shopping around. The two best prices I have found are with Liberty Mutual and Progressive. Wanted to hear your experiences with these two companys before I switch insurances. Full coverage insurance. Coverage limits and deductables are the same in both cases and premiums are within a couple hundred a year on three vehicles.
They are all great companys on the phone and paper but how do they do when YOU need THEM? Thanks Gents!

No experience with the two companies you're asking about but I would check with Allied Insurance. Farm Bureau dropped me when they said I had too many tickets back in the late 80s. Went to Allied and they wrote me for less with more coverage. I have cleaned up my driving record but had the ocassional deer strike or hail claim - always paid with no hassel and my rates have actually declined steadily over the past 18 years. Have my home, auto, farm, and personal liability coverage with them.

I was with Allstate from 1981 to 1998. Never had any problems with them at all. They were also either cheaper or the same price as all of the ones I checked with once when trying to find a cheaper rate. Only reason I dropped them was because when I went to England, had to change insurance agents because the agent in New Mexico wouldn't carry me with the vehicle moved to Texas and the new agent wasn't the best I had ever dealt with.

STAY AWAY FROM GEICO!!!!! !
They are the best insurance company to have as long as you don't have to deal with them.

Try contacting USAA and see if your eligible. I have had GREAT luck with them with both vehicle and home owners insurance/content insurance. They beat Progressive, Allstate, State Farm, GEICO, and just about every other insurance company when it comes to price and service.

I'll second USAA....I don't think you can beat their prices, and service (when we've needed it) has been good. I have no problem dealing with a company over the phone, though. If you feel you need an agent who knows your name, then go someplace else.

Becoming eligible is easy...if you have ever served in any of the armed forces (including the Reserves), you're in. If you can talk someone (a parent, a sibling, or even a friend)who has served into it, they can sign up for a USAA credit card (that they never even have to use), add your name to the card, and you're in. Then cancel the credit card. Once you are a member, your kids are eligible, also. (and their kids...)

They insured my house, also, when I lived in town. I would still be with them, but they won't cover class 10 properties (I'm too far from a fire department)

They also do Life and Health insurance, investment planning, etc.

And every year that I can remember, they've sent a refund check in the mail right before Christmas. When their claims for the year are less than they planned for, they give a percentage of your premium back.

Mike,
Okay what's this "Class 10 Property?" I am currently living in New Mexico, but plan on moving back to Central Texas (the way things are going it may just be a commute back and forth from Clovis) in a year when I get out. When I transferred my content insurance for my household goods from England to New Mexico...the property that I am residing in went under the coverage. They asked me if I had any other properties, but due to the fact that the land (40 acres of my fathers estate) is in my name but not in my possession I wasn't required to have insurance on it. I understood tha when/if it did that I could put it on my policy and would require insurance in case something happened on it. Are you saying that they won't cover you if your property is out in a rural area with only Volunteer Fire Departments for service?

Have you used any of their investment programs? I have thought about it, but not sure what I want to attempt to get into. I don't have any bank accounts with them or credit cards because I have more than I need now...just need money to put in them LOL. At the current time, I have my "significant other" and one of her daughters on my policy. I have a sister that is having problems getting automobile insurance that she can afford that will give her good service. I didn't know about her being able to go under me. I will have to check into this. Thanks for the tip.

The only "problem" if you could call it that I have had with USAA is when I tried to get car insurance for a vehicle when I first got back here in Jan/Feb 03. They told me I was delinquent on my Vauxhall Astra that I sold prior to leaving England and sent them a copy of the policy and transaction prior to leaving. It seems that the different departments were slow in communication over the Christmas Holidays. Once this was sorted, no more worries.

They also are offering the best rates for new and used vehicle purchases at this time other than the manufacturer's 0% on approved credit. Each time I have looked at a prospective new(er) vehicle I call them and am told that I am pre-approved for $XX,XXX and to call them when I buy with the details where to send the check to. This makes buying a little easier...especially since the last loan I had was paid off in Sep 94, and my credit buying history isn't the best or the highest.

later days mate,
Jim

When I built our house (10 miles from the fire department that has the contract for fire protection for my township) I had to provide a whole list of information on the fire department, like number of members, what equipment they had, and how far away was the nearest source of water accessible year 'round. After answering all this, I had to wait a week and then call back to find out if they would cover me. They wouldn't. Sometime in this process I thought I heard the term "Class 10" to descibe my situation. I would give them a call and see if they will cover your situation. The funny part is that they did write a "construction policy" while the house was being built. American Family is covering it now...Farm Bureau would be cheaper, if I could prove $1000 a year "farm income" (I probably have to file a Schedule F on my taxes to be considered a "farm") I've considered buying a pig from my brother for $1000 and selling it right back, since it just has to be "income" and not "profit"!

I know what you mean. I live near the coast and my homeowners (Allstate) has skyrocketed over the last few years. It is close to 800$ a year now. I know people who pay close to 2000$ per year for basic homeowners insurance. Anyone know of a good company that still writes policies for people who live near the coast?

I don't know where you are but if you are in the northeast (like maybe West Virginia and northeast), I highly recommend Farm Family. I have been with them for years. It all came about because I had had a claim on my homeowners with my previous company and they dropped me like a hot potato. So I went to Farm Family. Eventually got my vehicle insurance with them, too. They have been nothing but great. I had one claim with them when my daughter tried to rip the door off my Duck Odor several years ago. They paid it, no questions asked, and never increased my rate. Can't ask for better than that.

You might want to check AIG, they beat both Geico, and Progressive. If your an NRA member they will give the best rate, though I already had them and couldn't save anymore with the NRA deal.

I'd have to recomend you check with Electric Insurance @ www.electricinsurance.com I found them a few years ago when getting a quote from Gico or Progressive, one of those companies that also gives you other companies rates. I was with State Farm for 30 years before that and Electric saved me 60% for identical coverage. That was without switching my homeowners or farm liability. Those insurances I have with Shelter and even so, Shelter can't get close to Electrics rates on auto insurance. Since being with Electric I've had 1 glass claim and 2 claims where someone has hit my vehicles in parking lots and left without a word. On the glass claim Electric gave me a choise of several places to take the car, where they would pay 100% and guarantee the work. Or, I could take it any place else I wanted and they would pay, but not guarantee the work. That seemed fair, I took it to one of their suggested places, in an hour it was done and I just signed the paperwork. On the other 2 claims I got one estimate sent it to Electric and got a check about 3 days later. I used a different body shop the second time and Electric called me and ask why. I told them that on the first deal the shop had left a rattle in the door, I had taken it back once and they still didn't get it out so I didn't want to use them again. Electric said that was perfectly understandable, take that vehicle also to the second body shop. I had $100 deductable on both but they didn't ask me to pay anything for having the second shop repair what the first shop hadn't done well on that first vehicle. I have to admit I was cautious about switching to a company with no local agent, but at least in my experience with Electric, that was not a problem at all.

Have been with Liberty Mutual for auto coverage for over 30 years. At times I have compared and could notbeat them. They have always been quick with claims but I go to admit the the largest claim I have ever had was a total ona 30 year old car that I just happened to have comp. on. On that claim it was just a matter of agreeing on the value and they sent me a check in a few days. Did have my homeowners with them for a time but when I moved back to my old farmhouse they wouldn't cover because my old house didn't meet their requirements but I could understand that.

I used Farm Bureau for years for everything. Still have my farm owners policy with them and they write my multiperil crop ins. Really great! I've had several major claims and they have always done what I consider 'right and fair' by me. Homeowners and auto is with State Auto of Ohio, been pleased with them too.

Rates were the best I found, coverage is good. Only 1 claim (ice storm damage) and they settled quickly. They were about the same price on home and vehicle as FB but about 1/3 more coverage (at a level I couldn't get from FB)

Look at American Family if you have an agent or go to there web site. But if you are compairing rates over web you always get quoted the higher rates go see an agent in your area and insure home and autos together you save money

Try having the company quote your home insurance too, this will lower the rate on the car insurance. Try Frankenmuth mutual insurance in Frankenmuth Michigan. 989 area code I think. Those insurance bills suck dont they.

I would recommend an insurance company that offers both Auto and Home coverage. I have been very pleased with Shelter Insurance. They offer all coverages, from cars to trailers to Houses and horses. At a great price and service!!

The body shop manager here at work hates Progressive. I think it is hard to get any extra out of them and they don't like to use OEM parts. I don't know about Liberty Mutual.

I have a company called Auto-Owners I had to use it once so far on our van and all went fine. P.S. That body shop manager always liked State Farm, but I think he is changing his tune since his basement flooded twice and they are going to cancel him. There all Great just don't dare use them.

I also have Auto Owner and am very pleased with them. The local agent is great to work with. Never batted an eye when I told them my van got rear-ended by a tree. I have my homeowners, vehicles, boats, even my 56 JD covered through them. Loren

In my experience, the only company worse than State Farm is Allstate! These two are, by far, the worse that I have ever had to deal with.

Doug-I gotta disagree. I've got State Farm on my vehicles and they've always paid the claims. They're shop of choice is the local Lincoln/Mercury dealer (in Iowa) and their body men are top notch. What makes or breaks an insurance company is the AGENT. 35 years ago before I had St.Fm.) my car got rear ended and the other guy had St.Fm. His agent had him knocking on doors in the neighborhood to see if he could find a witness to what happened. I was leery of St.Fm. after that, but my parents had them for house and car back then and were pleased. Go talk to an agent--I haven't found anyone could beat St.Fm. rates (ex. full coverage-68 Mustang--$29.00 every 6 mo)

Yea, I know the body guys don't like Progressive. I had a claim with them last year, and they were more than fair about everything. The thing is, Progressive won't live with padded bills. I mean, they won't give the body guy $500 profit for a windshield job.

I've had good luck with Progressive. Online billing and payment is easy, and they came out right away when the tree branch fell on my car. Cut me a check on the spot.
