I checked the fuse-OK
I decided to change the thermostat and the $8 switch.
Test drive- blew a small cloud of black smoke initially and then not again. So I think its fixed. Check fuel mileage later.
The fan had stayed on, now it operates thermostaticly. I thought it had quit working but it was on by the time I got back from the test drive.
I was going to sort it out between the thermo and the switch but they were both in the same area and had to drain the radiator so I just changed both for $17.
I work from the cheapest on so having it serviced was the end of the line and not using passing gear was not an option.
Thanks to Everybody

Always good to hear back from a post. Make us wonder sometimes if our advice did anyone any good. I bet that car wasn't going into closed loop. Hope your fuel mileage picks up. I run a pretty constant 28-30 mpg in a 93' 3.1 Lumina.

Thanks for the feedback tlak. I suppose if you wanted to know if the thermostat is working properly you could first examine it to see if it is stuck open. You could then heat it in a pot of water with a thermometer to measure the water temperature at which it opens. Glad to hear that the problem seems to be solved. Great site.
