Gasketed Surfaces

Must metal to metal surfaces that will be joined with a gasket be cleaned down to bare metal, or is it just sufficient that they be smooth? Specifically, let's say you have cleaned the surfaces well of rust and dirt. They are smooth. Do you have to mask them when you are painting, or can you join painted flanges with a gasket and sealant? I'm referring to say a steering gearbox, or a water manifold. Not a head gasket or a hydraulic manifold, where the pressure will be high.

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Clean, bare metal is always the best, what you are talking about may work but why chance it?

You are relying on the integrity of the paint to make the seal rather than the gasket material and housing.

Also, gasket sealant has to be every bit as good as both to preserve the integrity of the seal.

That said, I seldom install a gasket dry; including head gaskets. Didn't used to be that way, but history has taught me otherwise.

Select the appropritate sealer for the job.
