Some perkins love to drink oil. I've seen one on a combine that needed to be filled up almost every time you eat. Still ran good and no problems. drank oil when new and its appatite only increaded with age.

We have an 1850 that has used a quart every 8 to 10 hrs of hard use. My dad complained to the Oliver regional rep. He said to leave it alone, man was he right 14000+ hrs later and the motor has never been apart. Knock on wood, I think the oil was cheaper than the overhauls would have been.

as a rule of thumb, max oil consuption should be 0.5% (deere) to 1% (volvo) of the fuel consumtion.

Can't say for a tractor, but I ran the same engine in a shrimp boat for 10 years and it used very little oil. Smoked a little blue when cold but under load hardly any smoke. If you're having to add much over a quart between oil changes, something is amiss. Our crankcase fill was 5 gallons with the cooler lines and everything, but a quart per season was all she would drink.
