Gas pains

I have an 850 Ford tractor that burns propane. I like the propane but my local dealer has stopped selling because his pump broke and he says it cost too much to reapir. It was very convenient for me to drive the tractor over there and have it serviced. Only about 2 miles from the house. What are my propane refueling options now? It would be a big hassle to load it on the trailer and take it to another place. How much more will I be charged to have a truck come to me? Can I service it from the small gas grill bottles? I have the hose and fittings. The person I bought the tractor from had a propane tank and the wet line. I'm contemplating converting the tractor to gas. How big of a deal would that be and how much would it cost? Thanks for your help.

Just had this discussion with my propane dealer. Yes you can refill from a bulk tank. Will require a pump, either electrical, or manual. Electrical requires special permits to install, etc., here. Some propane dealers have gotten around this by going to a hand powered pump. This is probably not a route you want to take, as there's a lot of pumping involved! (Work!) Either one will involve some expense, and inconvenience. Find out what your local propane dealer is willing to do, otherwise, swap tractors.

Propane has been a hassle for me. Not only did you need the 300 gal nurse tank, and had to get the truck out to fill it (200 gal min/trip) but the whole process of refueling, starting and stopping the tractor, excessive heat, high fuel consumption and safety.

Only good thing I can say is it starts easy in winter; course so does gas.

I'd opt with the other 2 folks and recommend a different fueled tractor.

Trade it for a gas tractor.

Looks to me like you have two options, either purchase a storage tank and have the truck fill it when needed, or sell the tractor and purchase one that will run on gasoline. I suppose you could convert yours to burn gas, but I think that would get expensive. You would need a carburetor, gas tank, and probably a different hood. Quite possibly you might also need a different manifold, and maybe even a different cylinder head.

TnT;

Keep the 850 as is and look around for a good gas or diesel fueled tractor. An extra tractor might come in handy. Can you remove the permanent tank from the tactor and mount a portable tank in its place?
