I just bought a Farmall M and I have a couple of questions for you Farmall buffs.

On the left side of the motor (if your sitting on it) there is what believe is the gov. up towards the front. I have a oil leak that appears to be coming from behind that, is that possible and if so how hard would it be to fix?

Also the steering worm gear, it calls for a 90w oil, but mine leaks the oil out I think the previous owner just had grease packed in there.
Will that work or do I need to replace a seal somewhere?

Thanks for any input.

Ray, while you''re checking the gov. for oil leaking check the gov. linkage for worn connections. Mine came apart cause a cotter pin sheared and you would'nt believe how fast that engine will rev! Definitely not good if you're in road gear.

Yes, that is the governor, and there is a shaft coming out the back, attached to the crooked looking arm, which in turn is connected to the hand throttle. There is an oil seal where the shaft comes out of the governor housing, not that hard to replace, but the gov. will need to be removed from the engine and taken apart in order to get to the seal. It's not rocket science or anything, pretty simple. You might want to get a complete set of manuals for the M, takes a lot of the guesswork out of repairs.
Most of the Ms and Hs are using grease in the steering gears because the 90wt. just won't stay in there. If yours drives and steers OK, don't worry about it.
