some of the guys in the fire house are looking for the front end of a stone boat, we have to move some large rocks and I remembered when I was young and on the farm my grandfather had one of these and it worked fine. If you have one and are in the north east please contact me. BLW

In our area, they are called stump boat, basically build as describe on the other posts.
They are popular at horse pulls. Actually ask the horse people in your area, you might find one easilly that way.

John: A stone boat is typically a flat piece of steel that large stones are rolled onto, thus saving the effort required to lift them into a wagon or similar transportation. You roll the stone(s) onto the stone boat, then drag it to wherever you want to put the stone, usually the edge of the field. Common modifications to the basic boat include wooden runners and an angled front section so the boat doesn't hang up when dragged. An old car hood is probably the most common stone boat, but much more elaborate ones are also used.

John, a stone boat is just a rudimentary sled that you can roll a big rock onto and then tow it away. As you can see by some of the responses, they can be as simple as an old car hood, turned upside down.

The homemade ones I've seen were made out of half-inch thick plate steel, a couple of feet wide, with oak planks bolted to the top of the plate. Bent up a bit in front, and torch a hole to hook the tow chain to. Another steel flat bar on top of the ends of the planks to hold them in line.

huh? how the heck do ya make a stoneboat outa a truck axle, we made a few ones with a 3/8 steel plate on the front of oak boards but found that car hoods are easier to come by and slide better and are usualy free

I have 2 stone boat heads they are factory made, they are quite heavy so they would have to be picked on my farm they are poured cast iron about 30 inches with rounded front with large hoel back end has a number of holes where you bolt oak planks . the idea of car hood could be used for small rocks but is much to light for large rocks, Leo cech browerville,Mn. email lcech@rea-alp Thank you
