Hi - thanks for the comments. The tractor was basicaly free, a retired friend gave it to me. I live in Yakima WA and it seems that around here there a quite a few cheap tractors due to people going out of business (apples). The Massey 135 series of the same vintage in good codition go for about 2500 to 4000. The tractor seems to be in good shape otherwise. It wasnt until I did a oil change and noticed chunks coming out that I knew anything was wrong. Investigation showed that the bearing were shot. Is there any other trouble spots other than the clutch that you would replace as a matter of fact? Thanks

I echo the majority of the other's sentiments. When and where do I come pick that 135/2135 up at? Just my two cents as well.

I'm in agreement with the majority----rebuild what you have and shop around first, you might get a better price.....
Around here, the old Fords (8&9s) are bringing$2500 if they run----sounds like you've got more tractor than that.
My .02 worth....

This has been pretty well hashed over but I'd vote for the rebuild if everything else is good and you like the tractor. I've built and I've cut my losses and had it go both ways on both. Wound up pouring $5000 in a 1410 Case DB (plus a couple of $500 repair jobs) after paying $5000 for it only to sell it for $6500 three years later. I should have cut my losses. Best to know how deep the hole is before jumping into it. All in all, better of with the 'devil you know' than one you dont. I'd see if I could get that done a little cheaper.

if you already own it and don't have to make payments, then that is a big plus. i don't see anything wrong with your idea of rebuilding it. lots of folks spend more than that some machinery. i would go do it if it was mine. like someone else said, you will be sure of what you have and not someone else's headache.

They bring from $4000 to $5500 around my parts. They are as good of a small tractor as anyone ever built. Rebuild it and you know what you have. Go buy another tractor, and you just might be rebuilding that one in a year. The 135/2135 is extremely popular worldwide. You MIGHT find one or two people that will talk them down, but they fro the most part, don't have a clue what they're talking about. John

I will base my answer on this. As far as I know a 2135 is the industral version of a 135 built in the 60's. Is this true???

How much would it be worth to YOU after you did this $2700 rebuild? How much do you have in it now?

You could (almost) NOT buy another for that but on the other hand you could part this one out and get another one. But then you take the chance that its needs a rebuild in the near future.

Many of us have much more in a tractor than what we can every even think of getting out of it but the main question is What will it be worth to you ????? ?

There's no way I'd put $2,700 in that tractor.

I wasn't clear. No, it's certainly not a crummy tractor. My point was that after putting $2,700 in it, you still have the same tractor, worth $3,000 or so (maybe more or less where you are).

Kevin: Ignore the above individual. He's been trolling around every board on YT for the last few weeks looking for people to bite. The 2135 is an excellent little tractor, and you'd be hard put to find a better one for the same $2700. Assuming that the rest of the tractor is in decent shape, I would much rather put my money in rebuilding a proven tractor than I would take my chances on another, less capable replacement.

Four years ago I put $2000 into rebuilding an IHC 300. They sell for about $2000 at auctions. Today I am picking it up again from the shop, the rings never seated right, it smoked horribly. Also needed the crankshaft reground, so probably near $1000 bill? Don't know yet.

Yes, I put too much into this tractor on the one hand.

On the other hand, with the working TA 10 speed with on-the-go hi-lo shifting, independant pto, and Fast hitch, this is an extremely useful tractor to me, baling with the small square baler all summer, grinding feed once a week all winter, and shelling ear corn. It is the perfect match for those implements in my operation.

What would I buy to replace it? For $3000, I would be buying someone else's worn out tractor. I'd be looking at a rebuild in a couple years anyhow. Or a bad tranny, or ..... And, I don't think I can find these same features that I really use for that amount of money.

So, for me it was pretty simple. Rebuild. Then I know what I have, what shape the rest of the tractor is in, and so on.

For me, rebuilding was the right way to go. Hopefully this time the rebuild will 'take'. I don't know what went wrong 4 years ago, I varied speeds & ran it fuill throttle for a time on some operations..... Mechanic says it shouldn't have been a problem, just one of those things.
