Emissions controls of one type or another started appearing on vehicles after the '79 model year. Technically, if it's on the vehicle, it's SUPPOSED to be functional. When I converted my '81 GMC from a 6cyl. to a 355, I removed everyhing relating to emission controls. Not saying this is the politically correct thing to do, just telling you what I did. I live in an area of Texas where exhaust testing isn't part of the annual inspection, so I got away with it.
As for the safety issue regarding the "outboard gas tanks", I didn't concern myself too much. I remember model years where the gas tank was in the cab, behind the seat, earlier versions where it was beneath the seat, and finally, if gas tank location is really a concern, you can get aftermarket tanks that will fit between the frame rails.
My advice for a first time vehicle buyer, more than initial purchase price, is get someone that you trust to give you an honest assessment of the vehicle, in other words, "don't let the stars get in your eyes". An older truck is a lot of fun, but can also quickly drain your wallet if you have engine problems, transmission problems, and so on. You also need to have some mechanical skills to do some of the work yourself....
My .02 worth----good luck on however you decide!

daniel, No, the 82 model is not required to have a catalitic converter. But check anyway with the local authorities. Here in Texas the manditory yr for cats is 1986.
In 83 I cut my cat /& factory muffler off of my new GMC with 5000 miles and put duals on it.
I have worn out too many chevys with the gas tanks on the out side of the frame railes to count. The gas tank problems were very few in relationship to thetotal # of trucks produced inbetween 1973 and 1987.
Those old trucks are tough, heavy steal components. The 305/350/454 engines were very tough and reputations speak for themselves.
They are easy to work on, change up , modify, customize. Have fun! Later,
John A.

I found it rather amusing that the safety experts had to detonate the Chevy gas tanks in order to get them to blow up in an accident.

I personally have been in 3 major wrecks with this style of pickup, and burnt, one up (chrispy crittered) in a wheat field fire. The wrecks, we didn't loose a drop of fuel. One a flip and roll I was a passenger in the other was a T hit on my left frount and cab. The third was a jacknifed gooseneck trailer on the drivers side, major damage!
All I am saying is that the number of trucks that were produced each year would average somewhere about 250 K for 13 yrars, 1800 is a small number in comparison. Not to make light of those folks.
I have seen pickups that have broad slid into trees or power poles and only colaspe the tank.
At some point something will fail.
Over all that series of truck have and still serve their owners well.

The 1,800 people who died from gas tank fires in accidents would not find it "rather amusing" at all.

more inportantly--check to see where the gas tank is--some older chevies had them outside the frame rails and were deadly in a wreck--if this has that type, stay away from it!!!

Sounds just about like my first truck around your age, and if I'd been in an accident, there'd been bondo spread around for a million square miles. Can pretty much guarantee you that it's supposed to have a catalytic converter on it unless had a diesel engine in it. Everything you'd mentioned that it needed seems par for course for it's age. Hmm? How many miles? A gazillion? Could add up the $400 + all the other parts before you buy it, then look for one for that same amount that's in reletively good shape. Could be wrong, but I'm guessing that someone's gonna have you pay to do them a favor and get it off their property for them. Don't you have a family member, friend, neighbor that's looking to sell their old farm truck that's in better shape that you can trust and count on? I'd look there first. Oh yeah, do yourself a favor - don't install a 4000 Watt stereo and fill the bed full of base speakers that rattle your neighbor's windows. That'd probably anger them and make that old truck vibrate apart. Good luck in your quest Daniel.

You didn't give us enough information so I can only give you a general answer.

Yes, it came with a cat unless it was a 8,600 GVWR truck. Except possibly CA. Also has that nasty A.I.R. (air injector pump), at least the small blocks did. Almost everyone took them off when they started to squeal. If it's missing and your state has inspections, you fail.

I'd say you could do better for $400.

i dont remember when the convertors wre put on vehicles, but, its easy to tell if it came with one or not.take off the gas cap and look down the filler.if it has the 1 inch hole in the filler neck,it came with a convertor.if it has the large poening, the it didnt.unless the state you live in requires a convertor, forget it and save some money.
