Hey guys, any help, suggestions, home remedys, etc would all be greatly appreciated here. I got into what I figure was poison oak the other day, when I had to roll a small tree stump into my bucket by hand. Problem was I guess I got the roots, which weren't readily identifiable at the time, so I didn't know it til it was too late to do anything about it. Coming from the roots I got the "good stuff" and it eat up my left arm from the joint down to my wrist. I've been using a wash called Ivy-Dry along with a mix of caladryl lotion and, benedryl lotion along with taking benedryl tablets abd it's working but Not Fast Enough...if you know what I mean. Do any of you know of any thing else I can do to get rid of this mess any quicker? I've heard a bathing the affected area in Clorox water works, but I know it will sting like He--. Still if it comes to that I'll do anything to be rid of this mess. Again any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Another fan of Jewelweed. Works great, costs nothing. Does well on nettles and such as well.

Just grap a handfull, mash and rub.

It looks vaguely similar to pokeweed, in that it's got a fat juicy stalk and big leaves. It grows upright at about 3-5 feet. Tends to cluster. Grows in wet areas alongside creek banks and the like. Frequently grows where poison ivy lives.

Take a hair dryer with the hottest setting and put where it itches till you can not take the heat any more. It will stop itching for hours. Works for me.

Get some Jewel Weed which grows along a stream or in damp shaded, wet woods. Break open the stem and rub on It works. Danny Hearl

hope you are already cured but for me dampening the affected area w/ water and wiping baking soda on it takes the itch out. It will burn a bit for a couple minutes but when burn goes away so does the itch. Good luck

It doesn't work for everybody, but a product called Tek-New (sp?) causes my rash to stop itching in a day and disappear in 3. It's made from some wood product and it binds with the oils. There is a preventative they make too, to apply before you work with it.

Zanfel which you can buy a a drug store works great, but not the cheap (~$35) but cures the Poison Ivy & Oak. I have used it myself.

Go to the doctor and get a shot. It's a pain but so is the ivy and the shot works.

Good advice here.....but one more thing. Crank up your hot water tank, and take a shower as hot as you can stand on the affected area. It will sting! But it will eventually start to feel a little numb. That's when you need to quit. Get all the affected area that way. You will now have about four hours of relief. I don't know why it works, but it does. When I get it, three or four showers a day gets me through.

Take Care
Steve

Wayne,

I'm extremely sensitive to poison ivy / poison oak. I get it all the time. Forget all of the home remedies and over the counter stuff. Get to a doctor immediately. Get a cortisone shot and a dose pack of cortisone pills. You'll get good relief and have it over with in MUCH less time than any of the other treatments.

My dermatologist once asked me, "Tom, why don't you hire me to do your farming instead of paying me for all of the treatments for poison ivy? You'd end up saving money and time."

He was kidding of course. The shot and pills cost about $40 to $50 and it's the best investment of medical charges that I can think of.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

I have been allergic to that stuff all of my life.Have always been able to get rid of it by going swimming for several hours.Lye soap is also effective for me but is not as fast. I have never tried using a hot tub but that would probably be good especially if you add a lot of salt. just be sure to empty it, flush it and refill.

I have had really good luck with some stuf called Rhuli-Jel. It is in a tube and is clear but it sure stops the itching and sppeds the healing. Dad had it so bad one time he literally tried everything including embalming fluid ( Someone saifd it would work sooooo.....) he got the Rhuli_Jel and cleared it up in a couple of days.

I think any counter irritant works. Such as the bleach, scratching. I have scratched it raw, then applied wet salt. Works for me. Have a son in law who runs hot water over it as hot as you can stand. Hydrocortisone cream also helps. Still better the Rx steroids.

The poison is alcohol soluble. Wash the area with 91% alcohol... any drugstore. 70% rubbing alcohol won't work.

Option 1: Spend the forty bucks and go get a cortisome shot.

Option 2: One little trick the doc told me was to put cortisome cream on and wrap it up, preferable air tight. Made the cortisome work stronger.

If you get it bad enough, you're probably gonna need a prescription..... ..something with cortisone. Have heard of people dying after breathing smoke from burning leaves/vines and getting it into their lungs..... no personal knowledge of this; it may be an "urban legend".

Unfortunately, No Urban Legend, ask most any CDF or USFS firefighter about breathing Poison Oak. An uncle of mine was in the hospital for quite a few weeks after breathing it on a fire in Northern California. Pertnnear died from drowning due to the blisters it formed in his lungs. I also had a kid on my fire crew in the hospital from breathing it on a fire in SE Washington. Pretty miserable, he was.

Once knew a guy that got poision ivy really bad, just had to look at it. Fire chief who moonlighted with us parttime said "I'll get you some real lye soap, that will fix it up" and it did.

It does burn like a MOTHER,but if you want it gone the next day you got to use something with bleach in it. It helps(and hurts more) if you scratch it good before you do it.

I have been extremely allergic to that crap for all of my life. I have personally done just about everthing that has already been suggested, but when i get really fed up with the throbbing and itching this is what i do;
Apply hot water to affected area as hot as you can stand it, when the nerves in your skin get numb take a wash rag soaked with soap, alcohol, or bleach and rub it till you remove the blisters. Now put ice or ice water on the area. The next part seperates the men from the boys, pat the area dry and apply carb cleaner liberally. There will be nashing of teeth for a few minutes, but the itch will be gone permenently. I may be borderline sadistic but it will work.
