I am rewiring my trailer and have got all the wires color coded and matched to the proper lights and brakes etc. I have a 7 pin RV type connector. There is a white wire from there that has 12 volts to it constantly. I'm not sure where it was hooked up to on the trailer or if it even was. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the info guys. I got it all tied together today. The white did go to the battery. I had red and black going to the brakes, brown for tail lights and yellow and green for turn and brake lights. I didn't use the center pin but I might try using it for a back up light as that would be handy.

The 12V lead to the trailer is used on camping trailers with 12V interior lights and demand water pumps for the sink, etc.

If you don't have the need for 12V at the trailer, no problem, there is no need to wire anything at the trailer plug.

If you have a break-away swith to activate the brakes in case of coming unhitched it also keeps the break-away battery charged.

Here is another site explaining the trailer wiring.

I know that on the 4 pin rubber, you have yellow and green for turn/stop, brown for running lights, and white for chassis gnd.

On a trailer connector I once had red was for trailer brakes and I don't remember the rest. I do however remember a wire for trailer battery charging. Just don't remember the color.

As mentioned, checking voltage is the way to go.

That website that Ray gave you is good and that view there is looking at the trailer plug. White is usually ground on most RV/trailer hookups but color is not really a dependable way to go, you've got to test each terminal or lead just to make sure. The hookup locations on that site are the industry standard though. Are you operating all 7 pins?

I think the white wire is to charge a battery on the trailer. This website should explain everything.
