Hello, I have been trying to get a 55hp Johnson outboard running that has been sitting for 2+ years. I have cleaned the carbs, replaced the fuel pump and filter, new fuel line, new gas tank with fresh gas. It will start and run good in the driveway with a water hose and suction cup thingies, but however when I take to to the lake, it will not start. Something about it being in the water. Has anybody had this problem and know how to cure it?. I worked on it alot today, I'd start it up and let it run for awhile in the driveway, them immediatly jump in the truck and drive over to the lake and it wouldn't start in the water, but I'd pull it out, take it home, and then it would fire right up in the driveway hooked up to the water hose. I repeated this 4 times today!!!
Thanks in advance!.

If it has external controls on the carb, you can richen it up before you start it, and when it does start, then adjust it down, for the proper idle when warm. That technique was shown to my by a mechanic, and works on my 62 Evinrude ten horse.

Does that engine have one exhaust outlet above the water line and one below? If that is the case then maybe the one above the waterline is plugged with something.

Try taking off hood and giving a small shot of starting fluid had a johnson that done same thing. or you may have it to lean. good luck!!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !

Most likely the exaust in the water is too much restriction. There is a good web-site for this Question www.marineengine.com lots of experts over there.

Thanks, I just posted there too. Hopefully somebody will be able to tell me how to cure the problem. How would the exaust in the water be a problem because thats how its supposed to operate?.

The upper 2 ports on the rear of the exhaust housing are for "pressure release". If you back your trailer into the water such that the water level is right up to the flare where the housing and the cover meet, you have covered these ports.

That is a Loop Charged engine and exhaust reflections are a big part of the combustion cycle.

Take the boat off the trailer and with the boat level in the water try it. It should work.

Ramp may be too steep.

Yes your correct, it is a loop charged engine (not really sure what that means, but it has the decals). I took the boat completely off the trailer each time. I'm going to pay attention to how far it goes in the water, I think the upper exaust is submeged. I can adjust the depth of the engine easily on the back of the boat. "That is a Loop Charged engine and exhaust reflections are a big part of the combustion cycle", could you please explain that?.
thanks alot!

The top of the piston is flat, not domed like a naturally aspired engine. The side of the cylinder has a hole in it for fuel injestion. Course on the other side is exhaust but this port is higher up the cylinder so it gets exposed first.

With a flat topped piston, something has to get the inlet fuel mixture to stay in the combustion chamber so that when the piston comes back up there is something in there to go bang.

Thats where the exhause pressure pulse comes in. It's basically a tuned resonance chamber where the sound/exhause impulse oscillates causing a temporary blockage. This blockage is what is used in the next charging cycle to keep the fuel in the cylinder.

Works great and much much improved fuel efficiency over predecessors. Originally, they had to do it in 120 degrees. That's why OMC came out with a 3 cyl initially. Took them a long time to figure out how to get 180 or 90 degree engines (50 hp and 100 hp series 2 cyl and 4 cyl) to do the same thing.

Mercury did the same thing with their newly released (at the time) 3 cyl mid range engines (60 hp) and 6 cyl 115 hp.

The two little circles or squares (depending on year model) need to be outta da wadda to start.
