I may have sold my International flatbed truck with the 6.9 deisel in it, but the new owner is having problems getting it to start. It is getting fuel to the injectors, and it is cranking over. He (without telling me) used ether and got it to pop some but it pushes aginst the starter (kicks back) and won't take off on its own.

Fuel is probably 6 years old, AZ formulation, and the truck is here in upstate NY now. It ran decently before it sat that long, but it has only gone thru one winter up here, spending most of the time in sunny, dry , AZ.

A buddy suggested pull starting it which may be a trick as there isn't a whole lot of weight on the rear tires.....

Anyone know how to get this thing to run?

Thanks!

Truck

I agree dump old fuel change filters and add about 1gal of tranny fluid (AUTOTHAT IS) that will clean pump and injectors . Bacause of its high detergent content. Will make a lot of differance. Also check glow plugs they could be bad. I would never use starting fluid on a engine with glowplugs engine could have sudden death!!

I will probably get some arguement here but if the fuel in the tank is six(6) years old as you say, drain all the fuel and put some fresh stuff in there. Fuel that is that old has likely lost its "fire" and is probably the consistancy of motor oil.

I have a 86 Ford 250, with the 6.9 that sat for 2 years( going through the big "D"), and to get it going I ended up putting on another injection pump and it is still running. The pump was put on 8 years ago.

OK, the guy didn't bleed the low or high side and then he used ether. Hmm.

I'd replace all the fuel and filter(s). And then, using the manual, properly bleed it.

I agree. Diesel fuel has a natural affinity for water, that is, it attracts water. If the fuel tank was not completely full the air space was a natural water condenser. Warm days and cool nights exchanged the air and introduced more moisture into the tank daily. This moisture will corrode and etch the injector pump and everything else over time. Old diesel fuel will burn OK if it is still clean and free of water or other contaminates. The volatiles do not evaporate off nearly as quickly as gasoline.
