I just bought my first tractor. It was said to be a 1947 9N Ford. I researched it, after I purchased it, and from what I can find, it is a 1940 model. The serial # is 9N 14389. Can anyone tell me if I am right. It doesn't really matter, but I would like to know. It has been converted to a 12 volt electrical system. It runs very good and seems strong to me. It does need some sheet metal work, but other than that seems to be in pretty good shape.Being my first tractor (I'm 63 years old), I was just wondering if there are any things I should know about it. Thanks for any info.

This tractor does not have live pto, so if you are using a big heavy mower with it, buy an Over Running Coupler and use it. The prevents the tractor continuing to move forward even after you push in the clutch and brakes, as the brush hog spins down it is a big flywheel driving the tractor forward several feet....

William, if you're going to be doing any grass cutting you may want to invest in a Zang Thang to install on your tractor. They are not expensive and easy to install. I don't have the address or phone number but you can find information in the archives. The device helps keep the mower in a constant position.

From the serial no., it looks like an early '40 model.
Depending on what kind of life it had before you, you may want to give the engine , tranny, and hyds a flush to get the crud out. If the hyd and trans oil is milky or brown, it has water in it.
Use good hd oil in the engine, 30 wt, or if the engine seems pretty good, you can use 10-30, 10-40, 15-40, or 20-50. Use New Holland spec M-2C-134D oil in the trans, hyds, and diffy, or 90 wt is okay also. They hold 5 gals.
It would be worth aquiring an owners manual or a tech manual. They are worth what they get for them. They are available here or from various sources. New Holland dealers have them.

SN 14389 would be a 1940 9N (BTW... a 1947 would have been a late 2N or possibly an early 8N).

If you head over to the 9N, 2N, 8N board (on this site) you'll find more "specialized" discussions regarding these tractors...

Check out this site for your serial number and tractor details. Lots of good info to determine exactly what you bought.

Based on the serial number it is a 1940. Keep in mind that tractor engines can swapped out so you'll need to look through the site above and look for other signs to truly determine the year of your Ford.
