The problem I think I'm having is the diesel fuel mixing the oil. Because the engine is no longer using any oil, as it once did. My question: Is there a way to test the oil for diesel fuel?? Any help on this would much appreicated.

Early model 1020's have a separate power steering pump located on the engine timing cover, a blown seal here will dump hydraulic fluid into the engine. While the injection pump shaft seals are the most likely culprit, you should check to see if your tractor has this pump and keep a close eye on the transmission oil level, especially if you can't smell diesel fuel in the engine oil. I don't know the serial # break when this was changed, but it's easy to look at the front of the engine and tell if it's there. I have seen several injector pumps removed for rebuild when the power steering pump was the problem. Hope this helps!

no need for further testing, you came to the right conclusion. you need to find lhe leak source, and if its too hard- cover all three major sources: service or replace the injectors, service the injection pump and replace the transfer pump.

If you send an oil sample to an oil analysis outfit they can tell you what you pretty much already know!

Possible causes:

1.)Bad transfer pump.
2.)Injection pump shaft seal.
3.)Miss-firing cylinder due to bad injector, or due to lack of compression from a leaky valve, or bad piston/rings.

You should be able to feel of the oil on the dipstick and smell of it for fuel in the oil, will be thin and smell like diesel fuel. Don't keep running it this way, it will soon beat out the crankshaft and all bearings! LGD
