Hey guys, I know that this has nothing to do with tractors but I am getting an itch for some snow, I know some of you guys are saying---what are you smoking. But I like winter, almost as much as summer and I havent rode a snowmobile since I was a kid, I think I was about 13 I am now 35. If I were to look at getting a used sled what should I look for as far as wear and tear and if I get a 500cc engine vs. a 700cc engine what is the real difference between the two, just top end, off from dead stop are both. How safe are snowmobiles? I started thinking about sleds a week ago when an engineer I work with interviewed with Polaris two years ago and he just told me last week. And of course we discussed his trip up to northern Mich. last winter and he rented two Arctic cats.

Kurt: If you haven't rode a snowmobile in 20 years, you will be absolutely AMAZED how far they've came. Most of the newer sleds are oil-injected and a very large number are liquid-cooled as well. Reliability is far better than the old ones, and the handling and suspension are better by a factor of 10. Depending on what you're planning on doing with it, a 500 would be perfectly adequate for trail riding and such. On a used sled, the engine is of course the most important part--evidence of abuse, modification, or neglect is a good reason to look elsewhere. The track is another important item--they're not all that expensive or difficult to replace, but if they fail they can take out other components with them, such as the radiator, which on many sleds is located just above the track in the tunnel. A studded track, while nice for traction and braking, plays merry heck with the track, particularly if the studs are long or there are a lot of them.

I am in the same boat as yourself , but if i were you i would for a 4strore sled . Remember whem you were a kid and those 2strokes would always foul a plug out in the middle of no were. I have been leaning towards an a-cat we go up around green bay and rent different brands of sleds . cheaper than buying then finding out you don't like it all that well . just shop around this fall there will be deals all over MI WI MN dealers almost have to sell new for cost

The last thing I remember about snowmobiles is a Polaris my friend had in the early 70s. He took it out in an open field and flipped it over backwards, yes it was HOT! 3 cylinder racing job. Anyway he sold it pronto and we went to riding trail bikes. I moved to Nebraska in 1979 and had almost forgotten about sleds, haven't seen one in years, Thanks for the memories.
PS they kill themselves on 4 wheelers here.

Snowmobilers bring $128M into the economy of my county every year. We are thankful for the money. In return we send home 4-12 dead, 40-100 or so get life-flighted out as the nearest hospital is 70 miles away. There are untold hundreds/thousands of other less serious injuries.

There is a common thread in nearly all these accidents. Some weekend wannabe snow jockey decides to ignore the speed and other laws while zooming through the 1 million acre National Forest. We even had two of them kill themselves hitting the exact same tree exactly 7 days apart...both had just left the same bar! Then there are those who bar hop across our frozen lakes. Not knowing where springs or strange currents run, some of them hit soft ice. We leave their bodies in the water until spring when they float to the surface. Those who don't die wish they had... the DNR fines you $500 a day for water pollution and they hire a recovery crew for as much as $5,000 to fish the sled out. They do sell wrist spikes so you can fish yourself out but all the dead ones were too smart to wear them.

I don't think anyone was implying that you are a drinker or an idiot for that matter. You asked for some advice and you got some of the best advice that has responded so far. Even if you do not drink and are safety conscious, what Ron was saying is that if you are snowmobiling, you are going to have to contend with the crazies out there, maybe even in your own group if you hook up with some other guys since snowmobiling by yourself isn't quite as much fun. A lot of innocent drivers on our highways are killed every day even though they don't drink nor are they crazy, they just happen to be driving.

I don't know a whole lot about snowmobiles, so I can't help there. I did see video of a man (snowmobile racer) who rode his custom, hi-po snowmobile on open water for 15 miles. Who needs the inconveniences of winter to enjoy a snowmobile? Heh.

The main thing with snowmobiles is the track, make sure thats in good shape and doesn't have any rotten spots from the machine setting on the ground somewheres for awhile. You'd also want to know who owned it previously and what that machine had been though, one that has been raced and recklessly driven isn't worth very much in my book. Take a good look at everything and look for stuff thats been bent or broken up front which is something that happens from the machine getting jumped or they hit a tree with it etc... I would say the 500 would get alot better fuel economy than a 700. I had a friend with a 700 who complained about how much he loved the machine, but it consumed enormous amounts of fuel. Hope this helps!

Hi Kurt,
I don't think you're crazy, I love winter! (except for the -30 degrees F.) The kind of riding you want to do will decide witch sled to get. I have friends that are into the speed thing and if it doesn't do 100+ their not happy. Me, I have a 500 Ski Doo Scandic. It's a tank. extra long and wide track for flotation and traction. A real work horse. I use it to ride the kids without worry of getting stuck. I haul fire wood and even pull a drag to groom a couple miles of x-country ski trails on our land. It's not fast but a good trade off for me.

Been a bit,but in used sleds best all around I've driven was the Yamaha Phazers.Oil injected 488? twin.Quiet, quick, fast enough(75-80)on hardpack.Dependable, not so hi tech or hi performance to require constant attention.Depends on your companions too. Some of these fellas figure ya gotta have 100hp and trailride between bars at 80mph+.However many states are now really cracking down on hotrodding and posting limits on trails etc.
