Should I close the gas line when not using tractor. It has on,off and reserve turns on the engine top. Should I also ad some lead to the gas.

That vavle is a pain.

I wore out two of them shutting them off. Then I quit that. Now it don't leak anymore. Seems like that shutoff valve was $35 and $50.

Recently had problem with the float not closing and gas backing up in the air intake line. Took the carb to local tractor part vendor. He says he never saw a spring concentric with the needle before. We removed it and my float worked again. But it worked for years with the spring too.

Agree with Miss Grundy but it's an opinion thing on the shutoff. My float valve works ok, but I think that if I leave the fuel on, it might cause the thing to stick the next time I use the tractor. Probably won't, but again it's an opinion thing. Course I'm wearing out my Oring seal in my shutoff valve and she's not.

Never saw damage to an engine caused by lack of lead, but saw lots of pretty ones due to lack of lead; and clean oil, for longer periods of time.

If carburetor does not leak just leave it turned on unless it is in a heated building such as a shop. If carburetor leaks repair it at earliest opportunity. I would not waste my money on any of the so-called lead substitutes.

bill;

We always turned the gas off on our tractors. One time when I didnt the float stuck open and gas ran into the oil sump. Had to pull tractor up to the shop and change oil and filter.

How did it do that? Did it not have an updraft carburetor?

txblu;

It did have updraft carb. As near as I could figger since the gas tank was above the engine yet the gas flowed up thru the manifold and into the cyl.head ond seeped past the rings down into the oil. This was on our 800(850) Ford tractor.

Man that's amazing. But maybe not. That 800 used an up draft intake pipe from the air cleaner. If the hose that connects the carb to this pipe was in good shape, and the leak was big or went on for a long time I guess you could do it as the air cleaner inlet is above the intake manifold/head interface and you would just fill the whole thing with fuel and it would spill over to the cylinders.

Never thought about that.

Guess I'll keep mine off.

Thanks,

Mark
