Am older 10 HP single cyl Kohler engine. Runs, but short on power and splatters gas back at carb intake. My question is, does it have any kind of compression release that would mess me up when doing a compression test or leak-down test? I know B&S had their "easy crank".

You cannot check the compression while cranking, due to the ACR. Some gas "spitting" at the carb is normal, while revving it up.

Do yourself a favor, and download a service manual for free at:

Check the timing, and check for a blown headgasket.

A leak down test while rocking the engine shows valves and rings are passable.
Looks like its a coil that is playing games as it warms up.
Thanks
