I have a 1947 Farmall H yesterday i was using it around the farm and i was getting ready to put it inside. i was going to shift into reverse and it wouldent go. before i got the tractor it was sitting outside for a while and the motor was stuck. i got it freed up and running nicley. i just painted it and now this happens. i am trying to avoid taking the top cover off. i think the slide is stuck. i am going to try and change the oil. But if anybody has any suggestions please e-mail me. Also any body selling a Farmall H close to C.T. looking to restore another one. thanks.

i had something similar happen to my '43 H. it would only get reverse and neutral. after taking the giant plate off the top (what a pain that was) i found that the lever had come out of the shifter rail. i ended up taking pin out of the base of the shifter that runs right to left and found that the pin it slides through (that runs front to back) had 60 years of wear and the hole was oblong allowing the shifter to move up lifting the shifter out of the rail, binding it up. i welded the hole up and redrilled it, greased it up and it is tight again and shifts perfectly.
the way to check to see if you have this problem is to grab onto the shifter handle and pull on it up and down. if it moves, the pin that runs front to back is worn and needs to be repaired/replaced.

hope this helps..... ....Jim

Pretty common for the end of the gearshift lever inside the transmission to come out of the sliding shifter rail. There's a pin about 1/2" in dia. that runs left to right just under the spring loaded spherical shield on the bottom of the gearshift lever. Drive that pin out from right to left, lift the lever up & out and align the slots in the three shift rails just inside the hole, reinstall the shift lever and the pin and Your tractor should shift well again. If it happens frequently You may have to have a welding shop build up a little metal on the bottom & all four sides of the rectangular portion on the bottom of the lever that engages the three slots in the shift rails.

no i dont think the shifting rail fell out because if i try to put it in gear with the cluch out it dosent grind or anything it just feels like it is stuck. it could be though.

If it's stuck in two gears (as Dr. Evil tried to explain) the rear wheels will be jammed solid. Won't grind or anything, just won't budge. It's easy to get it moving again though, just take the shifter off and look down in the hole, you'll see what's wrong.
