fuel return line

I own a 1964 ford 4000 D tractor. My tractor has a fuel return line? which comes out the bottom of the fuel tank to the head. The line is blocked off. The tractor smokes "gray smoke" when started and last until the motor warms up. (The person) I bought the tractor from told me the reason he closed the line off, was that fuel would leak from this line into the cylinder head when the tractor was not running, filling the cylinders with fuel and leaking into the oil pan. He stated since the fuel return line was shut off that excess fuel in the cylinders is why the engine smokes during start up. The person I bought the tractor from thought the return line had some kind of valve inside the tank that was defective. (The motor was just rebuilt and is broken in) Does this make sense to anyone? and how can I fix this problem? Thanks! Russ Bernard

Thanks guys for your help! The motor is not using oil or water. The smoke goes away after about ten minute warm up. Ron, I checked that fuel return line and it comes out of the bottom of the fuel tank in the front. It goes from the fuel tank to the head! There is another line that comes out of the same point that goes to the fuel injector. Thanks for any help!!
Russ

Gray smoke at start-up can also be a signal of a crack in the head..

I think I was supposed to get back with you on this. Will see if I can't remember to check it when I get home today. Been trying to get hay in, dodging the rain, and just forgot. Like last night, I just finished raking the hay that has been rained on all week and thought I'd get to roll it today just to have rain hit me in the face before I could get home.

Russell I don't know anything about the Ford fuel lines but I have always heard that gray smoke was from oil and black from excessive gas. Do you have to add any oil ? Leaky valve seals can cause a problem like you mention.
