Any F350 owners out there that have the ZF 6-speed manual transmission? I've heard that it uses some sort of special ATF or Mercon oil--is that correct? Our owner's manuals was left at grandma's house and we won't get over there until the 4th of July. Don't even know if that info is in there anyway. Ours is a 2001 model, if that makes any difference. Should we buy the oil from the dealer or is there a good aftermarket type that meets/exceeds OEM requirements?

ford dealership parts man here. the tranny and t-case call for straight mercon. look at the tags on the axles. they could be either dana or ford. if the tag reads like D 203 H or something like it, it is a dana....ignore the f77a ab number.either way it doesn't really matter because they all take the same fluid. factory calls for 75W140 synthetic, only available from a ford dealer, but there are TSB's out that if you do alot of heavy pulling to drop back to 75W90 syn. one other thing is if you have a locking rear end then you also need friction modifier. it helps the clutch packs. with out the friction modifier you will develope a nasty chatter when turning and wipe out the rear end.

That's actually a Nissan tranny that calls for
regular tranny fluid like the automatics.

Don't know about your particular transmission but on my '90 F-450 with the manual 5 speed it recommends Mercon (Dexron II) ATF as the lubricant. Kinda surprised when I pulled the plug expecting 80-90 gear oil to come out.

Dan,

Thanks, I found several posts on a diesel site that recommends to use "ATF rated MERCON or MERCON/DEXRON III", not ATF rated MERCON V or "universal" MERCON/MERCON V. Mobil 1 ATF AND AMSOIL seem to be approved fluids also. Now I'm looking into rear axle fluid too--some folks are saying 75/90 and others are saying 75/140--both synthetic. It appears the diesels have the Dana axles (front & rear) that need the 75/90 and the gas trucks have the Sterling axles use the 75/140. Still trying to sort that out too.

Thanks again.

Hi Kevin,

From my 02 owners manual:

Mercon, Not Mercon V, for the auto, 6spd, transfer case, or PS.

F250/F350 SWR 75w140 synthetic meeting Ford spec WSL-M2C192-A Part#XY-75w140-QL, Ford/Sterling axle, 6.9 pints

F350/F450 DRW Dana 80, 75w90 Synthetic, Ford part #XY-75w90-GLS, 8.5 pints

Both axles types are rated 100k mile oil change.

Thanks T-Bone--that's just what the doctor ordered. Is there a way to tell whether the rear axle is a Dana or Sterling? Our truck is SRW but I was told the diesels got the Dana regardless of wheel setup. The housing looks like a Dana but I haven't looked for any labels or numbers. On the mileage I thought I remember reading that the tranny and rear axle fluids should be changed at 60K or so. Am I mistaken? I know it won't hurt to change them out either way but we're trying to get ready for a road trip and have many irons in the fire....

Hi Kevin,

According to the 5th revision (final) Owners manual, the F250/F350 SWR is Sterling 10.5"

When I get time I'll look to see the difference in the covers as one has a different shape and number of bolts.

I don't have a on-line copy of the service schedule but I'm 99.9% sure it's a 100K miles as it was the same for the Gold anti-freeze.

All front 4wd axles were Dana 60 after Nov 2001 and very few before 11/01 as it was run out of stock on the Dana 50 then all were switched too Dana 60.

All F350 DRW was Dana 60 front and Dana 80 rear from 1999 (?) to 2004.

Starting 2005 F250/F350 SWR Ford switched too a front 4wd axle strut frame attachment to replace the leaf springs. I didn't buy the 2002 Dodge for that exact same reason. Bummer!

The 2005 F350 DRW continues with the front leaf springs.
