I put the non-bat volt wire that was on the reg's bat. terminal on the L terminal. I found the field and gen wires on the reg were reversed. I've run an additional ground to the reg. I've got bat volts to the bat terminal on the reg., only +/- 1.5 volts on arm. and field terminals on the generator. Had the gen tested yesterday by a guy I've known to trust for 8 years now. Tickin' me off pretty good now.

Easy now Loren,it will all work out. If the ARM and Fld wires on the regulator were reversed it may have fried the fld contacts and resistors in the regulator. Try grounding the F generator terminal to the generator case. This will bypass the fld control part of the regulator and allow you to test the rest of the generator/regulator system. Be warned that the generator will now operate without regulator control,so don't run the engine more than half speed and not for too long. If the generator now charges with the F generator stud jumpered to ground, then yes,you need to replace the damaged regulator.

I must be so off my rocker I'm seeing things. I haven't seen any more than 6.2 volts of all the times I've checked at the battery. I had to use it today and figured I'd have to run home and change the battery with a spare on the charger. 15 miles and leaving the job didn't appeal to me. Ran the dang thing all gay and it fires every time, even the times I had to make several attempts due to almost non existant cranking. It's not the best battery. Any way, I'm stumped on what to due other than keep running it. ??? Is there any way I can see a charge voltage lower than the engine off battery battery voltage? This is what's happening. Get a 6.2 +/- at the battery, start it and read a couple tenths lower with a good rpm. Thanks for the help fellas.

Count the caps on the battery. If it has 3 it's a 6v battery and you apparently need a 12v battery. If it has 6 caps it's a 12v battery and if it measures 6.2v with the ignition off the battery is totally stone cold dead.

It's very common to destroy a good battery while playing with generator/regulator problem. If you did not correctly polarize the generator, that welded the regulator points and fried the battery.

The battery is a 6 volt. When I said the battery is bad I meant it isn't a very pwerful battery. Seems to me it should crank without "building up steam". Stops the first compression stroke and gains momentum from there.

Hi Loren , if you started the tractor before polarizing , then in my past experience , you smoked your voltage regulator. It will not charge. Go buy yourself a new voltage regulator. This time , make shure you polorize it before starting the tractor. It's a tough lesson , which I will never forget. I'm sure you won't either.
