I'm contemplating buying a disc mower to replace my old Ford 7' sycle bar mower. I used the old mower with a MF135. I have a MF165 diesel to power a 9' "haybine" hay conditioner now, and will use it to power a disc mower, but don't know what size will be best matched for the tractor. I grow thick grass hay. What is your recommendation?

I Used to pull a 8' Vicon Disc mower with a MF 168 and she played with it up hill and down dale, in crops thick or thin . I have used it on a MF 165 (4.203 engine )and it handled it very comfortably.Just open the throttle a little before you engage the PTO (remember you are gearing up from 540 rpm to 3000 rpm!) or you will stall the engine.

where i used to work we sometimes pulled a JD 920 MoCo which is 9'9" with a 275 MF. Was a bit of a work out in hills but it worked good in thinner hay. Rest of the time we pulled it with a Ford 7740.

I pulled a 6` 9`` with a 574 IH , about 54 HP up and down some steep hills without a problem . I would`nt want a smaller tractor on the hills . Thats alot of weight hangin on the back of your tractor.

I if you have hills I would recommend a 6 ft. disc mower. If your fields are fairly flat then you could possibly use a 7 ft.But before purchasing one check out the min. horsepower rating for the mower.I have an 8 ft. N.I. 5408 that takes a min. of 45 horsepower to operate. The weight of the disc mower is something else to consider.Mine weighs about 1,450 lbs.

my MF 65 handled a 5 1/2 ft. easily. Vicon CM165 brand. I wouldn't go over 6 1/2 ft.
