I was woundering how many other people use an old piece of equipement in a business. I have a discing and mowing business here in calif. I use an AC Model M crawler made in the 30's for discing, with an 8 ft. AC disc 50's era. For mowing, I have a MF 203 which isn't that old, but old enough.I have over 100 customers who I do weed abatement for. Most jobs are 1/2 to 4 acres If it wasen't dark I would be working now.

I farm about a 1000 acres in S.E. SD and my newest piece of equipment is my 1973 JD 7520. I feed 180 head of cows and 150 head of feeder calves with a modified 52JD A with a 345 Dual loader and a WD Allis Chalmers pulling a recently rebuilt 112 JD chuckwagon. I have a 1950 JD R diesel that gets as many hours on it as my 4020. It does everything from hauling manure to disking to pulling the corn picker ing the fall. the best part is when its cold out, the R starts better than the 4020. My WD ACs get about a 1000 hours a year and very seldom need any attention. If I do have major problems or one gets wore out, I just go buy another one because its cheaper than buying parts. Last fall I purchased a 1937 D7 Cat for a song that need some work. after about $1500 parts I found my self looking for a blade so that i could use it. Now with the wet weather, it has been going nearly every day pulling my neighbors out of the mud. The only problem is that I need to stop what I am doing to start it for them. I am a firm believer in using old equipment and it will last as long as you take good care of it.

Here's one: I stumbled on a Massey 1130 and a Case Comfort King rotting (makes me sick), but can't figure out (so far) who owns them. They're pictured on this site. I went to that town's village hall asking who owns the pair - they're still trying to help me. But, one of the village trustees tells me he knows of a tractor for sale, and takes me to a retired farmer's house, right smack dab in the middle of town (100'x150' yard). They take me around to two sheds around back, open one up and there sets a 56' VAC that is mint. The old farmer (very proud) rebuilt it, detailing what he did to it, including a 12 VDC conversion and a a brand new Ingersol belly mower for $2500.00. Other than the fronts being about 50%, the tractor is mint and fired "right now". The village trustee told me that the village needs a new tractor for mowing, but because the tractor is "so old", the village won't go out the $2500.00 for the VAC, but instead are going to go out $15,000.00 to $20,000.00 for a new, small Deere. Go figure!?!? I asked the old timer why is selling - he just learned has a bad ticker, was going to donate it to his church, but they don't need it now, so selling. Then, he walked me over to his other shed, and showed me his pride and joy, a Allis D-15 that he'll never sell, because unlike the VAC, he converted it to power steering and can still operate it, even though he probably won't much. That old timer? What a guy to learn from and listen to, but I don't need or want the VAC, I'm after the 1130. Mark - IN.

Yes, I have 6 old tractors I do my haying with. The newest is a 1970 Ford 5000. The rest are all Farmalls ranging from 1940 H to 1953 Super M with a 9 speed trans. Last year I finished mowing a field for someone early because they wanted to use the hay field for a wedding reception. I moved all the equipment out and the next day the lady called to ask me to "bring back one of the pretty red tractors and the red hay wagon and put it by the tent" they wanted to know if they could sit on it and take wedding pictures! Boy, did that make me feel good! Needless to say I got it right back there. Keep on using the old stuff, it's easier to work on...you can acually fix it yourself! Good luck!

I would be willing to bet that the vast majority of "old" tractor users for business would have to be those of us in full time agriculture. There really isn't a better alternative equipment source that would provide the same production at the same cost. Bigger and newer stuff has its place for sure, but consider this. Before I can bale hay with my 2000 JD 566 round baler with its computer controlled inputs and Mega capacity, I cut that hay with a 57 IH 350 gas and 54 SMTA. The old stuff ain't going away anytime soon.

I make a little side money by grading gravel driveways, parking lots, and loose dirt. I use a 1967 3020 John Deere along with the implement pictured.

I use a 1964 MF65 tractor and a 1974 case 350 dozer in my construction business, I don't seem to have any more machine problems then anyone else. I love both machines, although the dozer will be for sale shortly, after I do all the jobs around my own place. The tractor I wouldnt sell for twice what it is worth. Get back to work !

I think what you are doing is wonderful. I have a suggestion for you... why not put lights on your equipment so you can work at night? I'm not kidding, I put 4 55w halogens (2 forward, 2 rearward) on my Oliver 1650 so I can plow snow in the dark.

I think old iron is best anyway. I could buy 10 1650s for what a new fancy tractor costs and still not have as good as tractor.

My main farm tractor is a 1940 Farmall M on which I have installed a live hydraulic pump, wide front end, and a three point hitch. I wouldn't take anything for "Puffy". Harley
