Ford 801 power steering pump problem

Hi. I have a Ford 861 diesel with loader, 801 family. The tractor is new to me (purchased used). The reservoir for the pump spits fluid until the level is down too low to feed the PS. When I open it to put in more fluid, there is some froth there. Any suggestions?

Also, it looks there was perhaps ATF (red) in the system. I'm thinking of bleeding it and putting in the same hydraulic fluid I'm using for the loader (is that ok?).

I did find that one of the line fittings for the right steering unit was stripped and may have been leaking. I'm replacing that line. I also have a new filter for it.

Thanks in advance.
Mark

We used type F fluid(red) in our older Fords. The newer ones took a clear PS. fluid. The last time I tried to buy some the dealer told me to use 134 hyd. oil. So I would say that if you drain the old out you can use 134.

I used to haver an 871 and the hyd. oil in the pump usually looked as you described. I don't think you have a problem with air. The red color could be atf though. It should have hydraulic fluid like the tranny.
