I have been approached to do some custom haying by a few of my neighbors now.... I guess I need to know what to tell them for a price if I decide to do it. Most of the fields are between 5 and 20 acres, alfalfa and grass mix. I will be using a Gehl 12' mower conditioner, Vermeer 8 wheel V rake and a John Deere round baler. Could also possibly end up baling some small squares too so give me an idea on that too if you can. If you can put it in dollars per acre for mowing, $ per ac raking and $ per bale that might make it easier.... Thanks in advance, Paul

Try this for a starting point. Perhaps your state farm university has a similar site.

I go strictly by the hour for mowing and raking. If I get in a rough field and need to shift down a gear or 2 I want to be paid for that. I charge $40/hr. for mowing with a 9' sickle mower and normally cut 6-7 acres/hr. I charge $30/hr for raking with a double hitched side delivery rake setup. $7/bale for first 20 round bales, $6/bale for additional bales. .55/bale for small squares dropped on the ground. Might sound high but I've done this for a long time and I'm not getting rich. I use old equipment but keep it in top notch shape. Hope this helps.

I've done a bit over the years for the neighbors. If you are not taking part of the crop,I'd say do it by the hour not acre. That way you are not breaking your neck in unknown fields,or heavy crops.

I cut my hay, and sold it in the windrow for $50 per ton. The man with the baler will take 2/3 for him and 1/3 for the landowner if the crop has not been fertilized. If fertilized, the going rate is 50/50. The land owner gets half and the guy doing the work gets half

It may be implement alley, but there have been a half dozen posts lately on this subject that will be very helpful.

I think the answer partially lies in your local where competetion sets the price. It's not price fixing, it's economics. If you charge too little, you aren't there next year (went broke), and if you charge too much you aren't there (no customers), so you do the going rate.

In N.Texas, rolls are around $12.50 sitting in the field (he hauls) and squares are $1 sitting on the ground (if he has a big field and is close).

If you can't get to the field or for some reason you can't make good time in collecting the crop, then I would negotiate higher rates for those reasons.

Like one guy wanted me to do a rye field but it was thru 4 narrow gates, then 3/4 mile down a hill into the bottoms and in the bottoms were soft spots, tons of crawdad towers and general wet conditions. Rye isn't all that great anyway. I said no thanks.

I don't like it but life's a beach.

Mark
