I think the best, most reliable big pulling row crop tractor is the International 1586. It has anything you need!

Everything except closed-center hydraulics, big hitch lift capacity with lift-assist cylinders (I haven't seen a 1586 carry around a mounted 12-row planter), a powershift transmission, easily adjustable wheel spacing and decent controls. A Deere 4840 handily outshines a 1586 in almost every aspect, and that's coming from a guy that grew up around 86s and bled IH red for 23 years before seeing the light. The 86 was nothing more than a spruced-up 66 with a semi-decent cab. Good reliable tractors that sold well, but too little and too late to run with Deere. The 88s were slightly better (except for the atrocious serviceability of the front-mounted fan set-up - I just had the front cover and one sleeve and piston out of a 5288, so I know of which I speak), but once again, not good enough to compete with the Deere 50-series. This sort of thread is what's known as stirring the pot.

I wouldn't call an 86 series IH reliable, forget about the T/A did ya? And if you want pulling power get yourself a Case 2390, same horse but it has torque out the wazoo! You really want some power get the 23's big sister the 2590. And these are reliable tractors. Heavy but they are strong tractors and have some rather nice sized cabs on them too.

Yeah,if you don't mind the tin can cab,the t/a slipping,or the 6 speed trans that you may or may not get in gear, and the resale value of a '63 Studebaker, then it's one heck of a tractor!! He-He

Last time I saw a price for a good '63 Studebaker, it was almost out of sight!

You forgot to ask whose father is the strongest and smartest. All rowcrop tractors were good.

This is sort of like asking who's the prettiest girl at the dance. Bound to get some strong opinions on that.

1586 is a good tractor, but I'd go with a JD 4840.

David,

I've always liked the looks of those big horses. You're lucky to own one.

the best one is the one that starts everytime, runs strong and feels right to the operator for the size operation used on.

The best row crop tractors ever made were Olivers. Many farmers here still farm with them, even though most are 30-40 years old. Most other brands, including IH, are sitting in fields rusting away.

Ron, it must be just where you live. In this part of the country, the IH tractors are predominant, including the Hs, Ms, up through the 966, 1066 etc. Just a little way to the north and east, you will see Olivers, because there was a very strong dealer in that area, he is still open for parts and repairs, so those old Olivers just keep on ticking. The other green tractors seem to be taking a back seat right now.
