I have a case 530 diesle backhoe and the radiator will not hold any pressure. it leaks out of the over flow, and I found the cap didnt even have any spring on it to make a seal so I thought that was all it was but when I got the right cap it still flows out of the over flow very bad. The machine will run for about a minute and then start pouring water out. Where should I look, what is the problem? Any advice greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Wait theres more!! I have two of these machines. One of the old style engines and one of the new style engines. (If you can call a 40 year old engine new). With the head off check the protrusion of the liners above the block. the liners should be a few thousandths of an inch above the block surface and all be the same. Case had trouble with cracked counter bore in the old style engines. The way you can tell the old from the new is the old had a bolt on oil filter housing while the new style oil filter housing was cast as part of the block. Had a lot of trouble with the old one blowing water. Broken counter bore on number one cyl. Finally got it fixed. Just something else to check. HTH Good luck If you care to talk, call 313 2180461

The first (and hopefully an easy fix) is the head gasket. However, you don't say how you came by this machine. If it was in a dispersal sale, I would suspect that the previous owner(s) had removed the sealing washer to lessen any water leaking back into the engine after stopping, and perhaps already knew there was a more serious problem. They might know what caused it.
Look at the head gasket and assess whether it was changed recently.
I think you may have been 'caught', or you tripped up on this one.
Until you (or your supplier) tear into it, you will not know for sure what the problem is.
Regards, RAB

Engine overheated, warped head, tore head gasket, compression being forced in cooling system.

That's up to you.

At a minimum, the head comes off, gets resurfaced at a machine shop, you reassemble with a new gasket and set of head bolts.

The crankcase must also be checked for water/coolant. If present, the bearings are damaged and need to be replaced. The crank/rod journals may be scuffed.

Wosrt case, the head or block is cracked, and are a total loss.

You really won't know what you are dealing with until you tear it apart and inspect it. If you have someone else do the teardown, even that might get expensive. You may have the option of selling it "as is".

Thank you for the help. I am tearing the machine down myself and hoping its just the head and gasket. I suppose when the deal is to good to be true it usually is!
